Bundle web apps to standard OS X applications with this webview shell, enabling you to access certain services without using an Internet browser #Webview shell #Bundle web app #Create native app #Webview #Shell #Bundle
There are numerous online services that many of us utilize on a daily basis, but having to open them in a web browser can be a bit inconvenient.
WebShell is an OS X webview shell that can be used to create native Mac applications and access web services without the need for a browser. Coding experience is not necessary, but you do need to perform a few operations in Xcode to get things up and running.
Once you have downloaded the provided archive, you need to locate the ‘WebShell.xcodeproj’ file and open it in Xcode. Then, you can rename the project and let the app perform any necessary refactoring.
Afterward, you need to edit the 'WiewController.swift' file, in order to input the URL you want the created app to navigate to. The instructions provided by the developer make this task relatively simple.
There are a number of other settings that can be altered if you wish to modify the appearance of the application window, change the app’s icon and input copyright information, but they are entirely optional. If you only want to test things out, you are pretty much good to go.
The final step consists of archiving your build and exporting it as a Mac application. You can then launch it and use your favorite web app directly from your desktop, without having to keep a tab open in your browser.
While WebShell may not be accessible to complete novices, it is remarkably simple to build your own apps, as all the required code is already provided. All you need to do is follow the instructions listed in this review and on the developer’s website, and you should be able to create a native OS X app in no time.
