PostgreSQL Database Modeler (pgModeler in short) is an open-source solution designed for creating and shaping PostgreSQL databases. The advantage of using pgModeler is that it supports unique PostgreSQL features as well as entity-relationship diagrams.
The application comes with a straightforward user interface where you can work with multiple databases at the same time. pgModeler’s primary window consists of a main menu bar, a control toolbar, model editing toolbar, model canvas area, and different panes for the model objects, executed operations, model validation and object finder.
From the model canvas area (the place where the database model can actually be viewed and edited), you can draw various model objects, such as views, tables, relationships or textboxes. Moreover, the canvas area can be surrounded by dashed blue lines, which help avoid cutting an object out when printing.
Another noteworthy feature is pgModeler’s support for multiple PostgreSQL versions. Thus, you can create and edit models, and then export them to several versions of PostgreSQL using an optimized code generation method.
What’s more, users can also create their own plugins in order to add extra functionality to pgModeler. The application comes with a built-in interface for plugin development that offers access to all the functions and classes needed to built a new plugin.
As far as the supported objects are concerned, PostgreSQL Database Modeler works with most of them. The application generates a DDL command for each object you’ve configured in the database. Some of the few unsupported DDL commands include foreign tables and data wrappers, user mapping and servers.
To conclude, pgModeler is a great developer tool which you can rely on to efficiently create and edit PostgreSQL models. Being open-source, its development is supported by various users in the community that help the developer turn pgModeler into one of the better free database modeling tools out there.
What's new in PostgreSQL Database Modeler 0.7.1:
- [New] Added option to invert panning mode and range selection triggers.
- [New] Added support to use relationship attributes as special primary keys.
- [New] Created a small interface to pgmodeler-cli that enables the user to fix a broken model inside pgModeler GUI.
- [New] Added support to assign a sequence as default value of a column. The sequence will be converted to "nextval('seqname'::regclass) and the validation process will check if the sequence is correctly referenced by the table that owns the column.
