Receive GitHub notifications when something happens that requires your personal attention, and avoid being overwhelmed by unnecessary alerts #GitHub Notifications #GitHub Alerts #Repository Notifications #GitHub #Repository #Notification
GitHub can be configured to send notifications when something happens in one of the repositories you're watching, but many of these don't involve you specifically and therefore don't require your attention. Disabling notifications altogether isn't the best idea either, because you'll end up missing things that do require your attention.
GitPigeon was born out of the frustration of developers who don't want to deal with constant alerts but also wish they wouldn't have to check GitHub every few hours just to make sure they haven't missed something.
The app is designed to only alert you when something happens that necessitates an action on your part. All other events are ignored, as they are usually not critical and can wait until you check your account.
You can receive alerts when someone mentions you in a comment, when your pull request was reviewed, when someone requested or replied to your review, when checks on your pull request failed, or when all checks on your commit passed.
When you set up the app initially, you need to provide your GitHub credentials and, via your browser, install the GitPigeon app in all the repositories you want to receive notifications from.
It's worth noting that only the repository's owner can perform this step, but they don't have to install the desktop app as well — you can just send them a link to the installation page.
Once you're done, you can enjoy your new life free of useless notifications. When an alert does pop up on your desktop, you can be sure it will be something important that actually requires your input.
The app runs silently in the background, with no Dock or menu bar icon to add to the clutter. Just launch the app again if you want to change your settings or add it to additional repositories.
GitPigeon is a breath of fresh air for developers who are either suffocated by unnecessary notifications or have disabled them altogether. An iOS version is also in the works, along with support for GitLab.
