The Internet superhighway rumbles, and printers work incessantly. The need for an “on the fly” and clever, yet intuitively simple software application has never been greater. DJVuLibre aims to be such a software.

It comes with a minimalistic interface and menus that retain the customary functions that such pieces of software should have, like inward/outward zoom as well as page count and dropdown, for which you even have a neat sidebar packed with search and other tools at your disposal, as an integrated alternative. Step-by-step backtracking can be used to find the previous locations within the document at hand.

It has a highly intuitive interface, where what you're looking for is at your fingertips. Users can toggle continuous or side-by-side layout mode to read and view text according to their preference. The tool contains a virtual printer as well, that can export to .ps file format.

It benefits from the options of printing both in color and grayscale, allowing the management of image frames and crop marks, as well as sensible framing and alignment.

During our tests, we stumbled into one-time interface and stability issues, some which persisted throughout the duration of the entire session, but nothing was reoccurring or unmanageable.

Curiously enough, DjVuLibre could not be located in the “Open with” dropdown list of recommended software (application cluster). Instead, it can be found in the “Devices” section.The user is constrained to locating and opening files from within the software itself, and although it's not a deal breaker, it may irk some users. Exporting to a .pdf file (from a .djvu – format) with stock values and settings renders the file with unimpressive quality.

It's not a converter, and apparently it cannot even visualize a plethora of banal formats like Word or text documents, .jpeg, .jpg, .bmp or .gif, regardless of resolution.

What it could do, it felt particularly well optimized and lightweight, so it's definitely not a hog for resources, although its general purpose isn't to exert load on them.

It looks good, and the response is sharp, the general feel of using it being a satisfactory one, but the crippled functionality and format recognizing issues are what keeps pulling it down from becoming a great tool for handling .djvu files.
