There is no shortage of messaging services that can be used to communicate online, but they normally route data through centralized servers, which means that your information is never guaranteed to remain private.
Bitpost is a simple app that takes advantage of the Bitmessage peer-to-peer network to connect clients directly, encrypting messages with public keys that can only be decrypted by the recipient.
Upon launching Bitpost for the first time, an initial address is created that can be provided to whoever you want to chat with. You can create multiple identities and use them for various purposes.
The app launches a local pybitmessage node in the background that connects to the Bitmessage network using Tor.
You can begin sending messages immediately, as well as view the number of current connections and the amount of processed items in the title bar.
Sending messages is a relatively simple task, very similar to dispatching a standard email. You need to select your identity and the recipient, write the message and send it on its way.
However, you can also broadcast a message to all the users who are subscribed to your address.
If all you need is to send some encrypted messages, Bitpost can do the job just fine. However, if you plan to use it on a day-to-day basis, you may find it to be lacking in certain respects.
The interface has a minimalistic design that does not exactly look bad, but it will certainly not be to every user’s tastes. Unfortunately, there are no other themes available.
Also, you cannot blacklist certain addresses to block connections, organize contacts or enable notifications when receiving new messages.
Overall, Bitpost is a useful communication tool for those who wish to ensure their messages remain private. It uses the peer-to-peer Bitmessage to transfer encrypted information directly between clients.
