Sharing barcodes instead of the actual information is a technique preferred by many since you are able to encode a large amount of information which can then be accessed and quickly decoded by any camera enabled device running a barcode reader.
QuickMark is a small Mac application that can both generate barcodes using multiple formats and scan barcode images in order to extract the contained information. Of course, for the scanning function, QuickMark requires a camera to be connected to your Mac.
By default, QuickMark will use your built-in camera to scan the images but note that it cannot work with 1D barcodes. If your Mac does not come with a camera, you can use a UVC compatible device but there are certain limitations: QuickMark does not support firewire DV webcams and, if your device does include an auto-focus function, you might encounter issues when trying to scan small barcodes.
Note that if you plan to use QuickMark on Mountain Lion you need to provide access to your Contacts app. This is essential if you want the application to work properly.
QuickMark can also be used to create your own 2D barcodes and offers support for multiple formats: Quick Code, QR code or Data Matrix. You are able to encode different types of data: contact details included in your Contacts app or provided on the spot, URLs, emails, phone numbers, SMSs or text strings. You can try out the QuickMark barcode generating capabilities online, on the developer’s website.
To sum up, QuickMark is proposing a simple solution for swiftly generating, scanning and decoding 2D barcodes. However, you might encounter issues if your webcam does not come with an auto-focus function and you must provide access to your Contacts database to access all the app’s functionalities.
