Backtrack For Mac

There are tons of ways to record your screen and your voice, but most require you to start the recording manually when you know something’s going to need to be captured. But you don’t always know when something noteworthy is about to happen.

Backtrack works by continuously recording while running in the background and replacing old content every hour (or every 5 hours if you prefer). When something important happens, you can just save anything from that interval at a moment’s notice.

Once enabled, the app records everything coming through a selected microphone at all times, with the option to use screen recording as well. The time limit is normally one hour, but it can be increased to five hours if you wish.

After one hour, content begins to be overwritten. To save a recording, simply click the menu bar icon and drag the cursor, depending on the duration you need to capture. This recording can then be saved locally or uploaded to the cloud for easier sharing.

It’s worth noting that, even though Backtrack is recommended for recording things like conference calls, it will only record what’s captured by your microphone. This means that, unless you’re using speakers and their output is also picked up by the mic, you will only record one side of the conversation.

Screen recording works great, but the app’s inability to capture system audio will limit its usefulness. If you use headphones, for instance, only sound coming through your microphone will be picked up.

Backtrack can be a great tool, as long as you’re mindful of its limitation with regard to what audio it can capture. It allows you to save anything important that has taken place on your screen or was recorded by your microphone, but it will not pick up system audio as well.
