If you are a fan of ‘80s music, you may have stumbled upon a cool website called Poolside FM. It contains a vast collection of classic songs, coupled with various well-known clips to help set the scene.
Poolside FM is an OS X app that aims to bring these songs to your desktop, making it a lot easier to listen to music without having to keep an extra tab open at all times.
The application rests in your Mac's status bar and chooses tracks at random from the Poolside FM playlist. If you have never visited the website before, you should be pleased to learn that it provides a varied and high-quality selection of songs.
Its visual design is obviously inspired by the web page, and it looks very good on your desktop. You can view each song’s artist and name, although particularly long titles may be displayed fully.
Playback can be controlled with media keys, enabling you to pause, play or skip the current track easily. Moreover, unlike the website, the application allows you to return to the previous track, so you can enjoy it again as many times as you like.
Whenever the app starts playing a new song, it displays a notification to let you know what you are listening to. Should you find these distracting, they can be disabled from the System Preferences Notifications prefpane.
A great addition to the app's feature set would be a way to control its volume separately, without having to change the system sound level.
You can copy a song’s Poolside FM URL and open it in your browser at any time, and the app also provides you with each song’s SoundCloud link.
If you want to share a particularly nice song with your Twitter followers, Poolside FM can help you complete this action with a couple of mouse clicks.
To put it simply, if you have a Mac and enjoy listening to music from Poolside FM, there is no reason not to switch to this OS X app. It provides a better experience, is very easy to use and does not get in your way.
