If you want to block outside noises or play a relaxing ambient soundtrack when using your Mac, Kakapo may just be the app you are looking for.

It allows you to mix the numerous sound effects it is bundled with, as well as add your own. You can even download files from YouTube or SoundCloud and play them offline.

Kakapo’s interface is reminiscent of a mobile app, but this is not a bad thing. Scrolling through the available items is very simple, and you can enable or disable them with a single mouse click.

It would have been helpful, however, if you could change their order within the list, as you may wish to place the sound effects you use most frequently at the top, for easy access.

A decent number of sound effects are included. These are recordings of various environments or events, such as thunder, chimes, waves, rain or even the sounds you would hear in a Paris Cafe.

Clicking on an item starts or stops playback, and you can then fine-tune the volume of each of them until you have created the perfect soundtrack.

There is one feature, however, that we would love to see in future releases: an option to create personalized mixer presets, so that you can quickly switch between multiple soundtracks, each playing a unique array of audio effects at certain volumes.

Of course, you are not restricted to the sound effects the application comes bundled with, as you can add new ones from various sources.

You can import files from local storage, provide a link to an audio stream or even download tracks from YouTube or SoundCloud and play them offline.

Kakapo is a well-designed application that enables you to create and play personalized ambient soundtracks on your Mac.
