Open source macOS application designed with a single purpose in mind: to automatically lower the sound volume when your computer wakes up from sleep. #Adjust volume #Sound volume automation #Change volume #Volume #Change #Adjust
It happens to the best of us once in a while: a Mac waking up from sleep and starting to blare out your favorite track like a trumpet, panic ensuing all around the library or study hall.
Although lowering your Mac's volume before putting it to sleep is a simple remedy to this problem, very few of us remember to do it.
AutoVolume is an open source macOS application which comes with no bells and whistles, yet manages to do its job perfectly: it automatically changes your Mac's sound volume to a preset target volume of your choice.
The AutoVolume app has little to no impact on your Mac's system resources, up to 30 MB of RAM, and features a simple and uncomplicated user interface which helps you set the target audio volume using a slider control.
The slider goes from 0 to 1, with sub-unitary values for all the notches in-between. It would probably be a lot more intuitive to have it display percentage values, from 0% to 100%, as it is the case for the control sliders in macOS’ Sound preference pane.
AutoVolume also allows you to enable or disable it by checking the "Enabled" option available within the app's window. Moreover, you can also set the app to automatically launch on login, as well as view the current target volume.
AutoVolume will continue running in the background when you close its window to watch over your Mac's volume, but it will quit altogether if your use the "Quit" button, effectively stopping your Mac volume from being lowered upon waking up from sleep.
Even though AutoVolume works as advertised, it lacks some features that would make it even more helpful. At the moment, adding support for setting the volume automatically on system login, a status bar item, and the option to choose a particular audio device are a must-have.
In a nutshell, AutoVolume is the tool you've always needed, but you never knew you did. It will monitor your Mac's volume, making sure that when it wakes up from sleep people around you will not be rushed to the hospital with a mild heart attack.
