Although most Mac users think they are not at risk when it comes to malware, the people who develop such tools and release them in the wild are more and more interest on the Mac platform.
This is quite apparent since the discovery of MacRansom, a RaaS (Ransomware-as-a-service), a ransomware variant capable of infecting Macs and encrypting files using 128-bit virtually unbreakable encryption.
According to its authors, MacRansom's most important "features" are the fact that it stays invisible on your Mac until the malware author activates it and that it is capable of encrypting your entire home folder in under a minute.
As it happens, MacRansom also comes with a "downside," as it is only capable of encrypting up to 128 files. The problem is that you will not know what files it will pounce on until your Mac actually gets infected.
There are some upsides to the MacRansom story though: you will not get infected until you enter your password to allow it to install and the fact that Trend Micro's Ransomware Decryptor app for Macs is capable of decrypting your files if MacRansom manages to infect your Mac.
To use the Trend Micro Ransomware Decryptor utility to decrypt files on a Mac infected with MacRansom, you have to drag and drop the files or files you need to recover onto the app's main screen or choose them manually by clicking the "+" sign in the middle of the main screen.
Once the app loads the encrypted files, Trend Micro Ransomware Decryptor will automatically start scanning decrypting them. When the process ends, the app displays the restored files list, and you can go to the folder they've been exported in by clicking the "View in Finder" button.
Moreover, the resulting decrypted files are saved in the /Users/Shared/encrypted_bak/ folder, using the {original file name}.decrypt.{extension} naming format.
On the whole, even if the Trend Micro Ransomware Decryptor app only comes with support for the MacRansom RaaS, it is a valuable tool for users with Macs infected by this ransomware and a simple to use utility to restore their files without having to pay for it.
