Launched in September with much fanfare, the eighth major release of Apple’s iOS operating system continues to see impressive adoption rates across all device types worldwide.

Week by week, Apple has been tracking the number of device activations since D-day, and according to the last count, some 63% of all iDevices out there are currently running the software. That’s at least 63%, as the metric was reported on December 8, two days ago.

Devices capable of running the new OS include iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad mini, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as the fifth-generation iPod touch. Most of the iDevices currently being used today are, of course, iPhones.

A series of download problems and some widely publicized bugs have caused many users to refrain from upgrading in September, which left a lot of customers (who prefer to read the news before taking the plunge) running iOS 7. All that changed in October and November, when Apple commissioned several bug-fix releases.

The bug squashing continues to this day, with Apple releasing iOS 8.1.2 just the other day. According to the release notes, the update “includes bug fixes and addresses a problem where ringtones purchased through the iTunes Store may have been removed from your device.”
