OpenCL improves the performance of an app by leveraging the GPU

Apple has posted a technical note outlining an important aspect about iMovie (2013), the latest version of the company’s simple-to-use video managing & editing software.

According to KB article HT6023, iMovie (2013) requires a computer with an OpenCL-capable video card in order to run.

The Cupertino giant goes to elaborate a little, saying, “OpenCL is a technology that improves the performance of an app by using the graphics processor (GPU), part of your computer’s video card. If you try to install iMovie (2013) on a computer without an OpenCL-capable video card, you will receive an error from the Mac App Store.”

Instead of telling customers which Macs support iMovie (2013), Apple lays out the models that don’t support the software.

The list starts with MacBook Pros shipped in Mid/Late 2007, but Apple carefully notes that models equipped with GeForce 8600M GT are good to go with the new iMovie.

Also supported are the 24-inch iMacs with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS, and Mac Pros with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT or NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600.

Other non-supported computers include regular configurations of iMac (Mid 2007), iMac (Early 2008), and Mac Pro (Early 2008).
