Apple has released an updated version of its iBooks-creation tool, allowing writers to preview books in the Mac version of iBooks, now available with OS X Mavericks.

In addition to this, iBooks Author 2.1 addresses an issue that removed enhanced caption tracks from some movies, and incorporates various bug fixes and performance improvements.

“With the new release of iBooks for Mac, books made with iBooks Author can now be read on the Mac,” according to Apple.

The software is free of charge for all Apple ID holders. Compatibility starts at OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) or later. Obviously, any features available only with OS X Mavericks will not work with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion. The app weighs in at 446 MB.
