You might not know this, but that tiny FaceTime camera on your Mac can act as a motion-detection sensor with just the right piece of software.

That’s right. You can turn your Mac into a full-fledged surveillance system by simply installing Periscope Pro, a $19.99 / €17.99 software from von Alice Dev Team.

You can use it to record video clips with sound and store those clips anywhere you like, even in your Dropbox folder. This means you can keep a bird’s eye view of the activity in your home at all times (on your iPhone, iPad, or other systems).

“With its sophisticated motion detection system, you only record when there is something to see. You can also use either Timed recording (record every n minutes) or continuous recording, depending on your needs,” says the development team.

A few examples for real world uses of Periscope Pro include: seeing if the kids are bringing over their friends for a party when you’re gone; making sure your partner is sticking to his / her diet; checking on the babysitter; monitoring the pets, etc.

You can also use it to keep an eye on the Mac itself, and see if anyone is accessing it.

I’ll be the first to admit Periscope Pro is a tad expensive, but it sounds like a life saver.
