A New York-based technology company focused on enhancing the television viewing experience today unveiled its first consumer product - Umami, a companion TV app for the iPad.

Umami says the synchronous, content-driven iPad app should be available now in the App Store, yet it’s still to show up. Not to fear, Apple should be going through the approval process as you are reading these lines.

Now, what does the Umami iPad app do? Well, it automatically recognizes what you're watching on your TV using audio fingerprinting technology, and then brings you info, bios, photos, news, gossip and social conversation about the actual show you’re watching, as you’re watching it.

And it does so by using proprietary audio fingerprinting technology to sync continuously to live or time-shifted programming from all major broadcast and cable networks. The video embedded above says it all. When you’re done watching, drop a line or two in the comments.
