If you’re already bored with your iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3 and have a few hundreds to spare, Karalux’s gold plating service might just be what you need to put that smile back on your face.

Of course, I can’t be objective about it and say it’s a good idea. If you ask me, it’s the worst possible way to spend $650 / €530. But at the same time, it’s one of the cheapest gold-plating services I’ve heard of.

Karalux, a company that specializes in gold plating, has announced a service that involves having a surprisingly savvy woman take your iPad apart, drape the aluminum in 24 karat gold, put it back together, and ship it to you, all for the low price touted above. For iPad minis, the numbers are even lower.

“The gold-plating costs for iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 have been adjusted and different from the gold-plating costs for the previous iPad versions,” says a company representative. “Specifically, for iPad Air, the gold-plating cost is priced at its size and its type (normal type, and 4G type). The gold-plating cost for iPad Air 2/ 128 Gb and the iPad Air 2/ 4Gb is 14 million VND/phone. Other types of iPad Air have the same gold-plating at 12 million VND/phone. Meanwhile the gold-plating cost for iPad mini 3 is unchanged at 10 million VND/phone.”

Those prices translate to $650, $560, and $470. For Europeans, that’s €530, €450, and €380 respectively. That’s really a small price to pay to be walking around with a gold iPad.
