Hamrick Software squashes more bugs in the latest maintenance release

For the past month, Hamrick Software has released nothing but bug-fix updates for users of its popular scanning and printing software, VueScan. The latest release, VueScan 9.4.31, addresses a bevy of new bugs with various scanner models.

Don’t get the wrong idea. The headline is meant to highlight the buggy nature of VueScan for the past few releases, but it doesn’t affect your system in any way (or at least it shouldn’t). However, it is interesting to see that a piece of scanning software as old as time itself requires constant tinkering, especially when its developer is eager to maintain it with fresh updates adding new hardware support every week.

This time around Hamrick addressed problems with some HP LaserJet document feeders, duplex scans on some HP scanners, Canon Pixma MX920 machines at 1200 and 2400 dpi, and added support for 8.5x14 flatbed scans on HP Officejet Pro 8500.

The developer always takes the time to throw in something new, but it’s still surprising to see how many bugs are found in each release. However, this shouldn’t be taken as a bad sign. Unlike other developers that I’d rather not mention, Hamrick patches everything every time, from the smallest glitches to the most serious errors.
