The PSD Team has released a new development snapshot of Progressive Downloader for Mac users announcing plans to drop support for OS X 10.6 aka Snow Leopard in the upcoming Final update of the application.

A smooth-running multi-threaded download manager featuring an extensive contextual menu, Progressive Downloader is free and supports MMS, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and SFTP protocols. It sports a built-in mirror searcher, Keychain integration, link interceptor, and AppleScript and Automator support.

Version 1.6.16 Dev is out and available for download with a number of enhancements and tweaks. The PSD Team starts with a cautionary note saying that “support for 10.6 is dropped,” which undoubtedly means OS X Snow Leopard. The stable build currently available for download on Softpedia (Progressive Downloader 1.6.1) still supports this Mac OS release.

“The whole application has been re-thought,” says the developer. “[The] downloading part is now a separate process that theoretically should bring extra stability because, for instance, when downloading process crashes it doesn't affect GUI,” according to the release notes.

The new version also reduces CPU usage, which should result in a smoother experience for everyone and less battery drainage for laptop users in particular. Download Progressive Downloader 1.6.1 / 1.6.16 Dev from Softpedia and test out the new functionality today.
