Plants vs. Zombies 2 has been downloaded over 16 million times by iOS gamers around the world, making it the most successful mobile game launch in the history of Electronic Arts.

The studio itself confirmed the feat in a formal announcement this week, noting that the milestone figure was achieved in five days after the game’s debut in the iOS App Store.

The game took the #1 place on the App Store in 137 countries around the world, and achieved "one of the biggest opening weekends on the App Store ever for a new game title," said EA.

Tony Leamer, franchise business director for Plants vs. Zombies, said, “We are grateful and delighted with the incredible reception Plants vs. Zombies 2 has received from consumers around the globe.”

“We certainly had high hopes for the game, but to see fans playing the game so quickly and in such huge numbers is truly amazing,” added Leamer.

You can download the game yourself on any iPhone or iPad with iOS 5.1 installed. The game is free but watch out for those in-app purchases. If you’re smart, you can play through the whole thing without spending a penny.
