Tests conducted on OS X Mavericks with a new-generation 13-inch MacBook Air have revealed a substantial increase in battery life, all thanks to the power-saving technologies introduced by Apple in the latest version of its desktop operating system.

The 2013 MacBook Air saw considerable improvements of up to 30 percent, bringing the total battery life (on a single charge) to more than 15 hours.

Your mileage may vary based on what you do with the computer, but the tests conducted by Ars Technica seem to confirm that Apple has managed to squeeze out considerable amounts of battery life simply through software.

Apple advertises “up to 12 hours of battery life” for 13-inch MacBook Air computers. These tests suggest Apple is playing it safe with its advertising, but we can all agree even 12 hours on a single charge is quite an achievement.

The 11-inch MacBook Air can hold a 9-hour charge, for who’s asking.
