Apple today announced that OS X Mavericks, the latest version of the company’s desktop operating system, would be released as a free download for all Mac users.

As long as you’re running a Mac from 2007 or newer, Apple is offering you the tenth major release of its Mac OS completely free of charge.

Mavericks is available via Software Update from the Mac App Store, which means you need at least Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to make the download.

Apple hasn’t provided the exact system requirements for the upgrade to Mavericks, but users will need at least 2GB of RAM for smooth sailing.

The supported Macintosh computers are listed below.

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) MacBook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2009 or newer) MacBook Pro 15-inch (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) MacBook Pro 17-inch (Late 2007 or newer) Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) Xserve (Early 2009)
