Software Update won’t work, as the new app has been completely rewritten

Can’t find the GarageBand 10 update anywhere in your Updates tab? Not to worry. You’re still eligible. You’re just not looking in the right place.

GarageBand 10 is an all-new application (likely re-written from the ground up to take advantage of 64-bit computing), which comes with different resource libraries and a whole new code structure.

“To update to GarageBand for Mac (v10.0), install it from the Mac App Store. It is a new application and will not be in the Updates tab,” reads Apple’s winning advice.

According to KB article HT6019, your previous sounds and loops will not be overwritten, and if you somehow need to resurrect a previous version of GarageBand, you’ll find it placed in a sub-folder in Applications. It will bear the GarageBand name and the last version number you used prior to installing GarageBand 10.

Customers can choose to re-install either GarageBand 10.0 or GarageBand 6.0.5 at any time by visiting the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store.
