Automatically hides inactive application windows

There’s any number of tasks you could be doing on a Mac that require a clutter-free desktop, from writing and video editing to creating music or developing software. Some people simply work better with no windows sticking out from behind the app they’re currently using.

If that’s you, we’ll have you know that Nial Giacomelli is offering this free tool that automatically declutters your desktop when you’re focused on a particular app. Hocus Focus lets you slide the timer from a minimum of 15 seconds to a maximum 10 minutes for individual apps, and the preferences include things like launch on start, auto update, log activity, hotkeys, profiles, and more.

The great thing about Hocus Focus (formerly known as Houdini) is that it works exactly as intended, and it doesn’t cost a dime. Sure, the developer accepts donations, but using the software is otherwise free.

Personally, I’m having a very hard time keeping track of all the apps that hide automatically. Although I like a non-cluttered desktop as much as the next person, somehow it doesn’t seem to help that my other applications go into the ether one by one. If anything, it’s even more distracting for me. Though I’m curious what others think of it, so share your thoughts in the comments section below.
