Ingrid Fielker, Software Engineer at Google, has confirmed that her team has updated the iOS Gmail app with some new features and interface improvements.

Users can now set a custom signature for their mobile messages, as well as a vacation responder. You can set these by tapping on the gear icon at the top if the menu view.

Some Nested Label Improvements are mentioned in the changelog over at the iTunes App Store as well. For iOS 5 users only, there’s now a new custom sound for sound notifications.

“Don’t just type, scribble your thoughts and attach them via the new scribbles button in compose view,” according to the release notes. Ingrid explains that “you can now open up a canvas and scribble a message that will be attached to your email.” This can be done in all Gmail clients.

Last, but not least, numerous bug fixes and UI improvements have been implemented.
