Apple’s video chatting feature potentially threatened

Facebook Messenger is getting video calls, according to an Italian source claiming that tests are already underway for a new version of the app that integrates Skype functionality.

The feature is already available to desktop users via the Facebook web interface and now they want to bring it to mobile devices, according to iPhoneItalia. They’ve got the screenshots to prove it too (displayed above).

Development is said to be coming along nicely. The finished product should be out soon with the ability to video chat from desktop to mobile and vice versa.

The new functionality may pose a threat to FaceTime, Apple’s own video chatting standard, as Facebook Messenger’s video calling feature will work cross-platform.

Coincidentally, the Facebook Messenger app just got an update this week adding faster message scrolling, faster startup, a fix for the "blue screen" startup crash, Retina display photos for friend chooser, and a bunch of bug fixes.
