Symantec is the latest security vendor to release its own dedicated tool for detecting and removing the Flashback Trojan from infected Macintosh computers. Norton Flashback Detection and Removal Tool is a free download for all Mac users.

Applying to Mac OS versions as ancient as 10.0 “Cheetah”, the first major release of Apple’s desktop and server operating system, Symantec’s Norton Flashback Detection and Removal Tool “is designed to detect and remove OSX.Flashback.K from your Apple Mac computer running OS X.”

In order to run the tool, users must have access to the administrator password - “the same one used for installing new software or performing maintenance on your computer,” Symantec points out.

The app opens a script that scans your computer for the threat and, if the Trojan is detected, it will be removed. The changes created by the threat will also be remediated, according to Symantec.
