Little Snitch, the cool OS X app that restricts Internet access to apps in a selective manner (set by you), has been updated this week with a cool new feature.

Little Snitch 3.1 Build 3926 has Automatic Profile Switching, which means you can assign networks to certain profiles. The developer explains:

“Whenever you join one of these networks, Little Snitch detects the network change and switches to the associated profile automatically.”

Upon joining a network for the first time, the app will flash an alert prompting you to choose a profile. You can also configure a default profile that Little Snitch will use for all unknown networks.

Also new in version 3.1, the mappings between profiles and networks can be reviewed and edited in the Configuration pane.

Note that Automatic Profile Switching is off by default, so you’ll need to visit the preferences pane to switch it on. Other neat additions (from the official changelog) are listed below, followed by the download link.

- In the menu bar item “Silent Mode” and “Start/Stop Network Filter” entries are now hidden if “Allow Preferences Editing” is disabled. - Improved “Restore Factory Defaults” feature. - Updated help section to reflect changes mentioned above. - Fixed a bug which caused a kernel panic in some rare cases. - Minor other bugfixes and improvements.
