HandBrake, the open-source multithreaded video transcoder, has been promoted to version 0.9.6 on the Mac, bringing a number of platform-specific changes, such as support for OS X Lion and GUI fixes.

VLC 2.x or later will no longer work for DVD decryption, according to the developers. The app is therefore unsupported as of HandBrake 0.9.6, and libdvdcss mac is now the preferred method for DVD decryption. Those who still require the functionality are encouraged to download HandBrake 0.9.5. A .pkg installer is available from Videolan right here.

HandBrake 0.9.6 delivers support for Xcode 4 and OS X 10.7 "Lion". Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" is no longer supported.

On the GUI front, further Lion support has been added. The Live Preview window widgets have been updated to work under Lion and the positioning of widgets in the Audio panel has been fixed. The app also boasts a wider main window now, providing more room for various widgets.
