ClamXav, the free virus scanner for Mac OS X, received a fresh update today featuring a bunch of tweaks and fixes, and a new ClamAV engine (the heart and soul of the app that helps it keep your Mac healthy and secure).

Thanks to the ClamAV open source antivirus engine, ClamXav has the ability to detect both Windows and Mac malware. Like most AV solutions, Mark Allan’s ClamXav 2 can be set up as passive or active, allowing you to scan only specific files, or have it look at your entire hard drive and extract any potential malware it will find. Sentry mode lets you monitor your hard drive and scan new files as they come in.

ClamXav 2.6.3 Build 315 contains the updated ClamAV 0.98.3 engine and fixes for initial location of prefs window, issues where log files wouldn't get rotated properly, and an issue where ClamXav might not always correctly report “definitions updated.”

Mark Allan has a message for users who download ClamXav 2.6.3 Build 315: “If you have edited freshclam.conf and clamd.conf by hand, you can find your old files inside /tmp. PLEASE compare the files as clamd.conf is different. If you compile your own ClamAV, you'll need to copy the RunFreshclam tool again.”
