We might be forced to start taking Chinese iPhone leaks with a heftier dose of salt

Fake images of alleged iPhone 5S packaging have surfaced on the web, forcing us to take any new leaks from China with a greater dose of skepticism.

Instantly unmasked (or dead on arrival, as some would put it), the photos in question (collage above) aim to depict an actual iPhone 5S handset along with the packaging it comes in.

The phone is allegedly a 128GB model, clinging to rumors that Apple will double the maximum storage capacity for this year’s iPhone refresh.

Several (huge) giveaways can be noticed in the images upon inspection, including the fact that the S marker has been placed manually next to a (likely) real iPhone 5 sign.

Another image uses rotated iPhone 5 promo material with an unnatural fitting, while another actually claims to show the phone itself, yet that one also exhibits clear signs of doctoring.

In short, just know these are fakes when you or your friends stumble across them.

But that’s not to say the (technical) details touted in this so-called leak aren’t accurate. According to highly reliable sources, the iPhone 5S will indeed sport a dual-LED flash, while the 128GB capacity is also very likely to materialize.
