1997 action-adventure title arrives on iOS platforms

Square Enix has released the classic Tomb Raider II on iOS devices with a newly configured control scheme to support touch displays and “GRAND NEW LOCATIONS from Tibet, China to Venice, Italy!”

I’m not sure what Square Enix means by “grand new,” but I don’t expect the game to feature any new content, to be perfectly honest. The screenshots certainly don’t suggest it, though the marketing apparently aims to convince hardcore gamers that there’s more in there than there used to be.

Control-wise, playing the game will pose serious problems. The description says nothing about third-party controller support, but those on-screen controls look nightmarish. The good news is that you can swap them around and place them where you find it most suitable for you. The bad news is you’ll be covering much of the action with your fingers, and chances are you won’t be seeing tigers attacking you until it’s too late.

But while the stages themselves haven’t been redesigned or altered, the game does come complete with “The Golden Mask” expansion, which comprises five new bonus levels in a separate mini-adventure.

To download Tomb Raider II, you’ll need iOS 7.0. Square Enix says it has optimized the game to display natively on all iPhones and iPads.
