The HAL Project is offering a cool screensaver for Mac users, featuring some nifty simulations of the HAL screens from Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series.

Originally spotted by TUAW, the free screensaver puts some nicely rendered HAL 9000 animated displays on your Mac desktop, all of which you can see in the preview video embedded above.

It’s arguably one of the coolest screensavers available today, and it will delight fans of Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey films.

From Wikipedia: “The primary antagonist of 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) is a sentient computer (or artificial intelligence) that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with the ship's astronaut crew.”

There are two versions available, one that shows the animations one by one in full-screen, the other offering a mashup of interchangeable screens. A paid ($5/€3.7) version eliminates the splash screen and has more HAL screens.
