If you’re using AuthenTec TrueSuite software with “Fingerprint Log On” enabled on your Mac, there might be circumstances where you are not able to log in if your user account has a password.

In such a case, Apple offers a brief guide on its Support site showing you how to work around the problem. The steps are reproduced below (as per KB article TS5338).

1. Log in as a user with a blank password, or reset a user’s password as an admin to allow them to log in. 2. Connect the USB fingerprint scanner (the device that came with the AuthenTec TrueSuite software). 3. Navigate to Apple menu () > System Preferences > TrueSuite > Options. 4. Disable “Fingerprint Log On.”

Earlier this year, Apple acquired AuthenTec to use its technology to develop the Touch ID fingerprint sensor found in the iPhone 5s. According to some reports, the accuracy of the sensor can decay over time.

AuthenTec’s technologies provide security on hundreds of millions of devices in all types of markets, and the company has shipped just as many fingerprint sensors for integration in electronics, of which 15 million devices are mobile phones.
