In announcing the winner of its 50 Billion Apps contest (as well as the actual app that marked the milestone), Apple has confirmed some staggering numbers regarding the rate at which people download software from its digital distribution venue.

The Cupertino company behind the Mac and the iPhone confirmed earlier today that “Customers are downloading more than 800 apps per second at a rate of over two billion apps per month on the App Store.”

That’s some mind-boggling traffic going on in the iCloud! No wonder they’re having regular downtime.

Apple also mentions that its App Store now hosts over 850,000 iOS apps (for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch) in 155 countries around the world. More than 350,000 of those apps are iPad-native.
