A report from Korea says Apple will not be signing with Samsung for iPad 5 part orders. The same goes for the iPad mini 2, which is expected to launch this spring boasting a Retina display.
According to the Korea IT News report, “Apple recently sent the request for parts estimate for its 5th generation iPad and iPad Mini 2 to its parts suppliers, and Samsung Display was not on the recipient list.”
Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, Oh-hyun Kwon, had a media briefing at the general assembly of Korea Electronics Association (KEA) this week.
Asked about the rumor, Oh-hyun Kwon said, “the orders can go up and down in the course of any business – some are sensitive about the issue, but I am not worried about it.”
Apple has been steadily cutting off its reliance on Samsung for quite a while now. Such news isn’t a surprise, though it’ll be interesting to see whether Apple will also pull all chip orders from the Korean supplier.
