Bob Mansfield pressured Intel to make more energy-efficient processors

When Apple removes a high-profile executive from its bios site, you can be sure there’s going to be some chatter.

Apparently Mansfield has such an instrumental role at Apple that he will be almost impossible to replace. But that’s just half of the story ran by Bloomberg today.

The other half centers around Mansfield’s chip strategy within Apple, and how he reportedly built bridges between Apple’s software, hardware and design operations (especially around Scott Forstall’s departure last year).

Perhaps the most interesting tidbit, however, is this.

“In late 2011, Mansfield pressured executives at Intel to make more energy-efficient processors for Apple’s Mac line or risk having the company use the same A-series chips that run iPhones and iPads, said a former Apple manager who worked for Mansfield at the time.”

Apple has long been rumored to plan the use of its A-series application processors, which are manufactured by Samsung, in laptops.

However, considering the patent disputes between the Cupertino giant and the Korean chip maker, it’s hard to picture Samsung making all the A-series chips for Apple’s entire hardware business.
