Minutes ago, Apple rolled out a new version of its iBooks reading application for iOS customers, adding enhanced support for Asian language speakers, as well as more books for Japanese customers.

iBooks 3.1 is a rather minor update for most users, but for users in Asia, it’s a pretty big deal.

According to the release notes, “the iBookstore in Japan now has hundreds of thousands of books available for purchase, including fiction, manga, light novels and more.”

But it’s not just Japan that’s getting a leg up in e-reading via iBooks. All Asian users will benefit from this update, as “this version of iBooks also includes a number of improvements for reading Asian language books,” the changelog adds.

Compatible with all iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad models capable of running iOS 5.0 or later, iBooks 3.1 is a free download from Apple’s iTunes App Store. The app is optimized for iPhone 5 as well as iPad mini.
