Cupertino giant threatens to take legal action over “defamatory statements”

After scoring a win in a Chinese court against the Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc., Proview Technology received a letter from the American iPad maker demanding its founder, Yang Rongshan, to cease releasing false information to the media.

Proview did manage to get iPad sales banned in one Chinese city, but it’s highly unlikely that the iPad brand will be banned across the entire country.

Proview has alleged that Apple’s iPad dubbing infringes on a trademark it owns. Apple, for its part, says Proview hasn’t honored its side of the agreement after the Cupertino giant legally acquired the trademark years ago. Apple is now warning Proview that it will sue for damages caused by "defamatory statements."

The letter, translated into Chinese (to ensure Yang Rongshan understands what he’s up against), adds: "It is inappropriate to release information contrary to the facts to the media, especially when such disclosures have the effect of wrongfully causing damage to Apple's reputation.”
