An LED chipmaker based in Taiwan is believed to have been tapped by Apple to supply parts for the company’s rumored HD television product.

Citing the usually ambiguous “industry sources,” Taiwanese trade publication DigiTimes reveals that “LED chipmaker Genesis Photonics is expected to enter the supply chain of Apple's TV lineup by supplying LED chips to Sharp for LED-backlight applications.”

Genesis declined to comment, and don’t expect Apple to be any more vocal on the matter either.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook, noted during the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference that his company continued to regard the current Apple TV offering as a “hobby,” though he was careful not to scare investors by adding “we've always thought there was something there.”
