Users of Apple’s OS X Lion Server may want to check out a new Support document posted online by the Cupertino giant with the purpose of explaining push notification support in Lion Server.

Apple informs that the Push Notification service in Lion Server supports sending Push Notifications not only to Mac OS X apps, but also to iOS devices.

Administrators can also configure the service to push notifications to third-party apps that leverage the ServerNotification framework.

For software developed in-house, Apple posts a table that shows what kind of notifications are supported by Mail, Calendar, and Contacts. All three apps are found on both Mac OS and iOS. For example, mail does it all - meaning it has push support for using Apple Push Notification, XMPP, and IMAP IDLE.
