Foxconn, the company which assembles Apple’s iPhones and iPads, is expanding its US-based operations with a multi-million dollar investment in two Pennsylvania facilities, one in Harrisburg, the other in Pittsburgh.

CEO Terry Gou himself confirmed the investment, which bodes well with the US government's Advanced Manufacturing in America policy, stating that Foxconn Group will spend as much as $40 million (€29 million) in Pennsylvania over the course of two years.

The iPhone assembler will invest US$30 million in Foxconn East America, one of its Harrisburg-based facilities.

According to DigiTimes, the purpose is “to expand an existing R&D team to set up an advanced manufacturing facility for high value-added products for applications including automobiles, medical care and environmental production,” Guo reportedly said. Foxconn will be hiring 500 people for the jobs needed there.

An additional $10 million / €7.3 million will be invested in Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Melon University, for research and development on robotic industrial automation.
