After flipping on a live-TV switch inside its iOS apps, A&E Networks is now offering its programs to Apple TV customers through specialized channels for the puck-sized box sold by Apple. A Lifetime channel is also part of the mix.

Each channel requires a cable subscription to unlock all the offerings, and the only supported providers are DirecTV, Verizon FiOS, and Cablevision Optimum, with more soon to be added, according to the A&E network.

Only United States customers can watch the channels. Shows available for watching include Duck Dynasty, Bates Motel, Storage Wars, The First 48, Vikings, Pawn Stars, Swamp People, and more.

According to 9to5mac, the channels extend support to major providers that are currently not listed by Apple, including Comcast Xfinity, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House. However, the Live TV function seems to be limited to the iOS apps from A&E Networks, “as the Apple TV channels will received new episodes the day after they air.”

Apple has been steadily beefing up its Apple TV channel offerings ahead of a rumored major upgrade planned for this year. The Cupertino company is said to be eyeing not only an expansion of its traditional TV features, but also a foray into gaming (with support for third-party controllers) and a wand-like remote control similar to the WiiRemote introduced by Nintendo in 2006.
