With the release of OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4, Apple offers Mac users a Wireless Diagnostics tool that can assist in troubleshooting wireless connectivity issues by analyzing the Wi-Fi network and providing solutions.

“Wireless Diagnostics is included with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 and later,” says Apple.

If your Mac is able to connect to your Wi-Fi base station but you still don’t have working Internet, Apple says you should click that small wireless icon in the toolbar holding the Alt key down and select Wireless Diagnostics.

“After Wireless Diagnostics has completed an analysis of your Wi-Fi network, it will list any issues it finds and offer some solutions,” says the Mac maker.

To use the assistant, you must first update to OS X 10.8.4. When you launch Wireless Diagnostics, the Assistant will check your Wi-Fi connection and settings.

If issues are found, the tool will provide recommendations and, after it has completed the tests, a report will be saved on the desktop in the form of a “.tar.gz” archive dubbed “WirelessDiagnostics-” followed by a number which sets it apart from other diagnostic reports.

Apple says Wireless Diagnostics can use this report for further analysis too.
