As the default browser for all Apple devices, Safari's popularity doesn't look like it's going down any time soon. While it isn't a bad choice for privacy-minded users, it does lack one important feature that some other mainstream browsers have already implemented — an ad blocker. Add to that the fact that many popular ad-blocker extensions aren't available for Safari, and you've got yourself a bit of a problem.
1Blocker was designed to provide a solution to this particular issue, as well as many others you might not have known you were having. Aside from almost all ads, it can block trackers, annoyances like cookie notices, unnecessary comments, social media widgets, and lots, lots more.
While it's installed and configured like a regular app, it functions as an extension for Safari. When setting it up, you will need to open the browser and enable all the components manually. This only needs to be done once, and all other configurations can be performed from the app directly.
1Blocker is also available for iOS, allowing you to keep your iPhone and iPad protected as well. If you opt for the Premium edition, which is likely considering the limitations of the Free version, the extra features will be available on all your devices.
As far as blocking ads goes, the app is as powerful as any of the alternatives available for Safari or other browsers. No ads are deemed "acceptable", and it uses an extensive number of lists to make sure all banners are blocked, even those specific to certain countries.
While Safari does block third-party trackers by default, 1Blocker takes this one step further to prevent any personal information from being leaked and used to profile you.
They may not be ads, but some pop-ups, widgets, and buttons can be just as irritating. With this app, you can prevent all of them from being displayed while browsing the web.
You also have the option of blocking adult sites altogether, which definitely comes in handy if you share your Mac with your children and want to prevent them from ending up in the wrong place.
There are few things 1Blocker can't do, and its user-friendly design makes it a great choice for any Safari user who wants to cares about their privacy and wants to avoid seeing ads on the web.
Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that, whether you sign up for a subscription or pay a one-time fee, the app is going to cost you quite a bit. Given that you can find extensions that offer most of these features for free, with a bit of effort, you're going to have to decide whether the convenience 1Blocker offers is worth the price.
