New in Xee 3.0 (Jun 10, 2013)

  • Complete rewrite. Please treat this version as you would a 1.0 version of new software: There are probably some bugs left to shake out. If you find one, please report it on the bug tracker. Please don't post bug reports in App Store comments, as I can not contact you if you do.
  • Much more gesture-friendly interface. You can now browse images by swiping, and scaling and rotation gestures work better.
  • In general, the menus, UI and features have been re-ordered, re-designed and re-thought to make more sense. This will probably annoy you for a while if you were used to the old one, but I recommend trying to learn the new ways things work, because they should be a lot better.
  • Multiple window looks. (Regular, dark and black, so far.) This can help make the UI be less distracting when viewing photos, for instance.
  • Support for APNG, WebP (including animation), and old MSX MAKIchan formats. Also, MPO files are animated to give a slight 3D effect.
  • Colour matching is finally fully working. The normal Mac OS X colourspace handling is now used, so pictures should now always have correct colours.
  • Printing has also finally been added.
  • Much improved image scaling algorithms, running on the GPU. Down- and up-scaling images should look a lot better now. When set to show pixels, a special pixel upscaler is used to allow showing sharp pixels at any upscaling ratio.
  • Image loading is now handled in separate isolated processes, meaning that a buggy image loader can crash without bringing the rest of the program down. This should also be more secure.
  • The handling of zoom levels has been streamlined a lot.
  • Image metadata is now loaded with Image::ExifTool, which provides a lot more metadata.
  • The image metadata UI and the move/copy panel have now been combined and upgraded.
  • Uses the standard Lion fullscreen mode.
  • A few more file handling functions, like labelling and setting as desktop picture.
  • When cropping a JPEG, the cropping now snaps to MCU edges. If you don't want this because you are not going to save as JPEG, hold shift to disable it.
  • And speaking of shift, you can switch between regular scrolling and browse-by-mousewheel in the preferences, and you can also temporarily change that option by holding down shift while scrolling.
  • A newer and better database of JPEG quantization tables.
  • A new icon. It is a modified version of an original design by Adam Betts.
  • A few things have been removed from 3.0 that were present in earlier versions. If you absolutely need any of these, please use version 2.2 instead.
  • Support for OS X versions older than 10.7. 10.7 will be the baseline going forward.
  • The toolbar. It was never very compatible with the auto-resizing windows. A different kind of toolbar may be implemented in a later version.
  • Progressive image loading. It cause far too many problems and blocked too many other features. Instead, Xee shows a noise effect while loading.
  • "Same as Finder" image ordering. This is impossible within the sandbox. Instead, sort order is remembered for each folder separately.
  • YUV mode.
  • Single-window mode.
  • PICT support. (This may return in a later version.)

New in Xee 2.2 (Apr 26, 2011)

  • Multitouch support, finally! Thanks to generous donations of both hardware and source code, multitouch gestures for browsing, zooming and rotating are now available. Scrolling is also smoother on trackpads and other smooth scroll devices. Using scrolling to browse should also work better.
  • Uses a newer version of the archive reading code from The Unarchiver. Can now open more archive formats, including even ISO images.
  • Better compatibility with Snow Leopard. (Finding the sort order from the Finder works again, as does JPEG thumbnailing.)
  • Better support for PNM files.
  • More informative window titles when browsing archives.
  • Many other bugfixes: Viewing the clipboard works again, cropping does not crash, keyboard shortcuts work better, and more.

New in Xee 2.1.1 (Jan 12, 2010)

  • Added a Spanish localization by miliuconet.
  • Fixed another slowdown in the directory scanning code. Should be even faster now.
  • Fixed some bugs that caused crashes when reading JPEG metadata.
  • Some other minor bug fixes.

New in Xee 2.1 (Nov 23, 2009)

  • Support for viewing the unix PNM, XBM, and XPM formats, and also Dreamcast PVR.
  • Support for reading bitmap images from inside SWF and PDF files. These can also be saved as normal image files. (Note that this does not mean you can view normal PDF files! Only bitmap images will be shown.)
  • Support for more metadata formats: Photoshop, XMP and IPTC. Also support for simple image forensics: Xee can analyze the quantization tables in a JPEG image and look up what programs or cameras might have created it from a database.
  • Translations into Czech by Czech X Team and Simplified Chinese by Tianhao He.
  • Uncompression engine from The Unarchiver included in the app, so The Unarchiver no longer needs to be installed to read files from archives.
  • Support for reading files from archive and PDFs that require passwords.
  • Better support for Photoshop files.
  • Many interface bugfixes and tweaks. The image list should now also update properly when reading files on network shares and FAT drives.
  • Some crashes related to broken EXIF data fixed.
  • Faster directory scanning.
