New in TripMode 2.0.0 Build 486 (May 24, 2017)

  • Complete revision: Sleeker and snappier UI, better apps sorting, stronger blocking. Still as simple to use.
  • Profiles: Block different app lists per situation or network
  • Data caps: Block all data traffic when reaching data usage limits, to prevent unwanted fees
  • Accessible: Use TripMode in English, French, German or Chinese (simplified)
  • Improvements:
  • New, cleaner interface
  • Most of the underlying engine has been rewritten for better scalability, stability and improved performance. Memory and CPU consumption have been greatly reduced for comparable loads both in the UI and Kernel Extension.
  • Applications using XPC services (for example Mail, AppStore, HipChat, etc.) are now correctly detected and blocked. No need to enabled Safari anymore.
  • Better management of deleted apps avoiding potential performance degradation over time.
  • Developer tools friendly : iOS Simulator apps are now folded into a single entry and Xcode-provided git is separated in its own entry (If connecting over ssh, it’s not possible to differentiate the traffic and ssh is still the entry to enable)
  • UI traffic updates are now real time (individual counters are rate-limited to enhance readability on very fast connections).
  • Enhanced network detection for WiFi. Access points with random BSSID including many Android phones will now be detected and remembered correctly.
  • Enhanced detection of host-local connections for apps that bind on all available addresses.
  • Loopback connections can now be blocked (see the preferences dialog). Specific apps can be whitelisted.
  • Reworked the packet delaying and reinjection to avoid other firewalls falsely detecting TripMode as responsible of some connections.
  • Better installation and Kernel Extension communication checks.
  • Database is now optimized on migration
  • Preliminary TouchBar support.
  • TripMode now has a full help book
  • French localization
  • Introducing profiles:
  • Applications block settings can now change depending on the network configuration
  • Customize the feature to match your usage:
  • no profiles : the default setting, TripMode will behave as it did in version 1.0
  • automatic : preferred setting for most users. The blocked application set depends on the current primary network so that you can limit data usage to the strict minimum when on cellular and have different settings for public WiFi, work ethernet or at home.
  • manual : For advanced users who want full control on the blocked applications set. TripMode lets you manually select your configuration directly from the main window and will keep those settings regardless of the current network.
  • Place limits on the traffic for each profile:
  • get notified when data usage reaches a defined limit
  • automatically lockdown network traffic when approaching the set limit to prevent further data consumption.
  • Reset the traffic counter either manually or automatically each day, week or month.
  • Note that even in auto mode, profiles are not linked to an interface when counting traffic : the amount is what was processed while the profile was active, not the total amount of data that got though an interface. This means that TripMode cannot for example know that your smartphone consumed nearly all of your data plan by itself before you started tethering, or that a specific application required the use of an interface other than the primary one in a multi-homed scenario, so keep in mind that the limit and lockdown, while correct from the point of view of applications, may not reflect what you expect depending on your exact networking configuration.
  • Visualize traffic data for the current profile from the main window.
  • A progress bar appears when a monitored profile is active, letting you see at a glance how much you have left. If notifications or lockdown is set, the bar will change color to remind you of the impeding limit.
  • Enhanced notifications:
  • Blocked apps can now be signalled with a sound on top of icon flashing. Choose from one the system sounds or use the text-to-speech feature to know which app got blocked, a customisable delay helps you keep control over sound notifications when a lot of applications are blocked.
  • Reworked preferences:
  • Preferences are now organised under a familiar panel interface including the profiles settings.
