  • Expanded functionality of Web icon button in the menus of all databases. Pressing Ctrl key and clicking the icon will open the last visited URL (i.e., record) in a new window. This solves the problem of viewing side-by-side a Gmail or some other online email account and transferring orders to the printshop.fmp12 database tool (if people have not caught onto the online order form of the tool to make orders and create invoices or quotes). Also useful for other situations.

As a result, the free downloads of the latest data will be handled by SUNRISE with each new update. If you want to download more data yourself, grab your own key, enter it in the dialog box, and choose your subscription plan. We have also included the best free and unlimited daily and historical currency rates API solution for a limited range of currency symbols as a backup.
  • New currency rates script updated for increased performance.
  • Fixed an issue in jobs.fmp12 in not being able to copy at a click of the mouse on the URL.
  • In contacts.fmp12, a new SQL solution to grab gender based on first name means the relationships have been further simplified for improved performance enhancements.

  • Behind the scenes updates to jobs.fmp12 using efficient and quicker methods of finding and generating the selection criteria response document and cover letters in readiness for printing. Previously a script would have looped through the responses and used the find command to get to the right document for a given selected job. This version comes up with better solutions (e.g., use of the List function), thereby simplifying the scripts and improving performance.

  • Updated Open Street Map URL on all relevant databases.
  • Also noticed a missing character in the text filter of a URL validating custom function which can potentially affect the reliability of the URL maps and other addresses (mainly missing a ';' when the encoded URL needs the character, such as the encoded ampersand character).
  • All databases now have the update.
  • Hidden the slider graphic element when no records exist in Address Book of contacts.fmp12.
  • Any use of the Option key even in combination with other keys pressed creates too many problems.
  • Decided for the least problems that this version will change any use of the Option key to Ctrl key when seeing the Address Book details.

  • Added Apple.com and Bing.com options for latency time checks. Improved layout for jobs.fmp12.
  • Improved weather pop-up viewer in travel.fmp12.

New in SUNRISE Contacts 2023 1.6.5 (Jan 12, 2021)

  • Looking at a real-world example from an employer seeking to employ an Application Developer to build an app that can send signed documents over the network with SSL and encryption, we have decided to apply out Swiss-Army knife of tools in contacts.fmp12 to attempt this. It turns out to be easy enough and have added the menu options to not only Base64 any file (stored in a Documents container field), but also to encrypt the file. Paste the results into an email message and send to whoever.
  • At the other end, click anywhere in the encoded text and choose to decrypt and decode the Base64 format to get back the document in its original untampered form. Of course, we always recommend signing important PDF documents in Adobe Acrobat for this purpose. And you probably need to let the person at the other end know what the password is. If there is interest, we could expand this feature to simplify the need to remember the password through an innovative approach (but will require SUNRISE Contacts to decrypt), and to consider more direct means of transferring encrypted documents.

  • Rebuilt infobase.fmp12 for simplicity and greater ease of use. We have moved away from scrolling to the right portal record. This one requires selecting from a pop-up menu the record to focus on, and that record will show. Repeat for other categories and you can remember all your favourite records for each category. Includes web viewer that can switch from the Information field with a button and vice versa.

New in SUNRISE Contacts 2023 1.6.0 (Jan 6, 2021)

  • Audio player window in music.fmp12 has the minimize button available.
  • Various improvements to job.fmp12, including a more compact layout option for iPhone users (iPad users and Desktop users should have no problems).
  • Due to limited, if any, usage by Apple of its flagship products, we have discovered yet another example of Apple not continuously self-improving the products through regular use on its own instead of waiting for users to mention an issue or bug (and even then it depends on whether the number of users mentioning it are sufficient to warrant an improvement by the company). This latest issue is fairly obvious. It is to do with the Copy command not being flexible enough in the script form to copy text in PDF documents and web viewers for all FileMaker Pro versions. As a result of this latest observation, we have implemented an innovative solution to handle the situation in all databases.

New in SUNRISE Contacts 2023 1.5.7 (Jan 4, 2021)

  • Tab control now enters the document title in Documents section of contacts.fmp12. This version is characterised mainly by a revamp of scripts for playing music in music.fmp12 using the latest and more powerful custom functions as well as simplification of the scripts and fewer fields. As a result, you can do things like select records representing the found set in the music library, choose Create Play List, and move over to the Category layout to choose a category and Add Play List. All the records are added and verified to make sure no duplicate records appear. A very fast way to organise music into your preferred categories. Otherwise choose Create Playlist And Play to run through the music files one-by-one and recycle back at the end of the playlist. Playlist is retained on re-launching until you decide to create a new playlist. To more permanently remember your favourite playlists, add them to your categories.

  • Noticed an oddity in the dialog box requesting a password when pressing Option key and clicking the Web menu icon. Strangely Preview appeared as a button. This has been removed in all databases. Added username and password fields for login to web sites in the list layout of the Web section.

  • Refined Copy script to be the most compact and flexible possible for all databases.
  • Changed = to LIKE in sql statement in a custom function for greater flexibility in all databases.
  • For exact searches, we can use another function to filter the results.
  • Fixed an oddity in calendar date behaviour when changing the date of an existing calendar item in contacts.fmp12.
  • Extra testing using updated SQL custom function of available calendar items for current date for the selected (in Preferences) individual in the What's On Today. Without the testing, all records would have been shown starting with record 1 which clearly did not correspond to the name in the Preferences section. Now a graceful dialog box will let you know if there is nothing on today.

New in SUNRISE Contacts 2023 1.4.1 (Dec 22, 2020)

  • Added electronic dice for mathematical probability work and for gaming in contacts.fmp12. The completion of other minor updates means this version finishes the fix ups of all known bugs and now marks the beginning of new higher quality refinements to SUNRISE Contacts in 2021.

  • Added "Interview Questions table, with sample questions and advice on how to answer the questions in jobs.fmp12.
  • Expanded exchange rate feature in finance.fmp12 to allow for more currency names to have historical currency rates recorded.
  • Fewer fields and no table relationships for grabbing correct category for new transactions using new custom function.
  • All databases have refinement to category fields behaviour. For example, clicking an empty category field and clicking into another category can cause that latter field to open up for editing.

  • The Base64 text converter in contacts.fmp12 has been given a more powerful script to handle selected text in a field or a file in a container field. Results are copied to clipboard ready for pasting. Also added the reverse script. Basically, you just select the Base64 text in a text field and the converter will either copy the results to clipboard for the actual Base64 data component, or include the Base64 header information to convert to a file with the proper file extension and exported to the desktop. This version makes it easier to use the converter tool by placing the cursor anywhere in the Base64 text of a field and the tool will select the text and process it.

  • YouTube does not work with Web Viewer, at least not in FileMaker 16 (higher versions might be okay). So we have decided to send off calls to view this web site straight to an external browser. Also cloned contacts.fmp12, updated default database settings, re-imported standard records, and fixed (yet again) an issue in the dial tone files not being imported automatically from the sounds folder if they are missing (apparently missing an "/" after "movie:" in the file path despite working before without it). Whilst the number of records in each table are identical as before, it seems the database file is more compact, saving roughly 45MB despite using the compacted approach. It is unclear why this should be the case or which global fields once held important data. Will be testing this aspect in the meantime.

  • Auto calculate and update latitude and longitude information in decimal or degrees depending on where the co-ordinates have been entered. If it is in the decimal fields, the degrees fields are updated, and vice versa. You should see this in travel.fmp12.
  • Refinements to navigation system (and a new failsafe layout selection approach) and removal of some unnecessary scripts means more efficient and better performing databases.

  • Found an inconsistency in the category script in infobase.fmp12. Fixed, with further enhancements to layout design. In elearn.fmp12, we have added the option to specify a picture from one of the subjects and a title to display in the splash screen. For name of presenter to appear as well (to replace copyright notice), make sure the name is typed in the Lessons Editor for that selected subject. Refined Animation script to be more flexible with the duration per animation now individually customisable. Added a Copy icon/button to jobs.fmp12 for quickly grabbing information about the job name.

New in SUNRISE Contacts 2023 2020 3.5.7 (Aug 21, 2020)

  • Noticed in the enhancements to invoices in contacts.fmp12 an issue with style, color and text size buttons for printing invoices. Moved choice of script to the right "simpler" one after being split from the main script. This avoids confusion on how to handle the different buttons. Also noticed three color buttons in labels not going to the right script, but all other buttons are fine. These have been addressed in this version.

  • New efficiency measures in elearn.fmp12 has meant that now nearly all container fields in all databases can accept content as a stored reference and not just embedded. The former means very rapid preparation of lessons in elearn.fmp12 with almost no time lag when playing videos. However, keep in mind that while this will keep the file compact, you still need to upload videos to your preferred online storage site (.e.g, a web site) and choose a web layout page design before providing the elearning tool to students.

  • Significant updates to security controls in the extended privileges on all databases. The improvements are more flexible in allowing fields that are empty to be entered and data added, but fields are locked down once the data is stored in them. This does not matter if the record edit mode is disabled. It solves an issue where users have to remind themselves to enable edit mode to enter new data in a new record. In contacts.fmp12, we have switched from the simple numeric incremental integer for the ID of individuals and organisations to UUID for a more unique identifier. Using the right identifier ID will allow imports to update existing individual or organisation records. Otherwise, you are assured that the unique nature of the UUID for each new record means separate individuals can remain unique and imported into different SUNRISE Contacts address books without interfering with other records. Due to the length of the UUID, further changes are coming to the interface of contacts.fmp12 for the next update. All databases have an enhanced last record visited retention solution that is more accurate based on ID of the record (not record number). The new solution has a means of going to this last visited record without affecting found set. As a result of the power of this solution, it now allows unlimited number of users to record the last page reached in the lessons of elearn.fmp12. Users can return to the lessons to continue from the last page visited. This page information does not interfere with different users.

Not only can you see a print preview of relevant layouts, but when you press Return key and see the dialog box to continue to print or not, press the Option key and click on the Continue button. This will show the print dialog box where you can specify which pages to print (i.e., avoid printing the blank pages). This is available in all databases. In finance.fmp12, we have got it to remember zoom level of card layout for transactions. A similar thing has been applied to jobs.fmp12 for application letter editing card layout as well as the selection criteria template card layout.

  • Following on from our popular new feature of allowing full individual name and/or organisation name data entry in a single field (and proving to be a hit for PC users with our Windows version), we have discovered a new bug. A new message in contacts.fmp12 will now inform users that when printing labels without a border, the container fields will comes with a thin white "border-like" spacing on the inside of the actual field border despite setting spacing to zero, image made to fit the maximum width and height, and turning off border option. This is a newly introduced bug into FileMaker Pro 16.0.5 from Apple. There are no known workarounds at the present time. Hopefully, Apple will provide a fix soon. Also a handful of the latest anti-virus tools (but still more than 50 others have not detected any problems) from VirusTotal.com has revealed a suspicious signature in the Site Specific Browser (SSB) app within the DMG file for sending people to our SUNRISE Contacts web page. For example, Clamxav claims the signature might be related to a keylogger virus named "PUA.OSX.KeyLogger". First alerted by MacUpdate this month, we have decided to create a new SSB from an independent third-party developer and named it Updates.app. With this change, hopefully updates to anti-virus definition files in the future will not pick up another suspicious signature (and the mysterious message on the MacUpdate page claiming the software is "discontinued" should disappear). A minor re-organizing of labels layouts in the hope of providing a workaround to the FileMaker field container bug, but during testing of temporary new layouts, it was found the bug is insurmountable. We have also added a message to "finance.fmp12" that the GetNthRecord function bug in FileMaker has still not been fixed after many years. Fortunately we have ptovided a workaround here.

With no obvious means of controlling this, the print fields in the Documents Archive had to be converted to Pop-up menus rather than drop-down menus.
  • Another oddity for FileMaker Pro 12 concerns selecting the Object Name. In list record mode, selecting the object by name can jump to the last record in the list and select the object there instead of remaining in the current record. As a result, a slight (but not perfect) change was needed. when navigating to the last portal of the current record within the Documents Archive. Thanks Apple!

DatabaseNames function is being used in another script serving this very purpose in a more useful way.

  • Provided fixed page sizes of A4 and A3 for graph paper.
  • On reaching a high level of refinement with the databases, we have noticed two oddities. The first involves the Record Security "lock icon" function. This has been introduced and tested as far back as the time when FileMaker Pro 8.0 was released by Apple Inc. This has worked fine. Since upgrading to FileMaker Pro 11, we have only just noticed the dialog box for replacing field contents for this function to do its job has popped up 3 times when the lock icon is clicked to lock.. A check of all lookup databases show the tick in the check box to "Perform without dialog" has somehow been removed. Yet the dialog box for the lookup databases has never appeared prior to FileMaker Pro 11 and the related script has never been touched since then. For now this issue is fixed. But we have decided to keep a close eye on FileMaker Pro developments in the future.
  • The second oddity involves the graphing paper labels. We see the "line per millimetre" label option will only show horizontal lines, vertical lines, or a combination of the two but never throughout the page. It has come to our attention of a graphic glitch in FileMaker Pro 11 where if the lines are grouped together and pushed right to the top and/or left edge of the layout design area, by choosing Preview mode you will see the above graphic glitch. It appears the lines must be pushed by 1 pixel away from the layout edges to resolve the problem and show a proper graphing grid. This is not the only software bug we have noticed with FileMaker Pro 11. This is now fixed.

New in SUNRISE Contacts 2023 2.7.8 (Sep 21, 2010)

  • Removed Export All Tables button in Preferences layout. Added Export and Import menu commands under the File menu instead. These commands will only appear for the Owner. Modifications to Import script to allow import of all tables in an old version of contacts.sun (which must be renamed contacts.imp). Restructured the script for multifunctional command use and made into the most compact form possible. Only minor changes to Export script command to maintain consistency in filenames used as in the Import script.
  • Removed border lines running on the inside of Front and Back DVD cover labels when the With Border option is selected. Border should only appear on the outside of the labels.
  • Added the ability to show some of the general notes as a pop-up tooltip when the cursor hovers over the record lock icon. Only appears for owner and admin users, but not for guests and web publishing users.
  • A failsafe method now incorporated to get default text templates generated and easily modified afterwards without the database trying to re-enter the default text. Same method also includes the ability to duplicate the last label design produced for the current individual if multiple designs are present and the user enters the name of a new database design. It will also include duplication of background graphic designs as well. A significant time-saving feature.
  • Fixed Graphing labels. Removed bitmap images of graphing labels and replaced them with EPS images for higher resolution printing and more compact database size.

  • Two minor incompatibility issues were noted under FileMaker Pro 11. The first issue involved the the pop-up list of all available lookup databases: it would not update and display correctly. The second issue involved the deactivation script and how certain commands were overlooked due to a new change in the Update script (see below). An additional command script in the former case and the same command added with slight rearrangement in the position of about half a dozen other script commands in the latter case helped to resolve these issues.
  • Streamlined the Update script and made use of the new script triggers. You will see improvements such as the moment when you decide to change an existing individual or company name to another name — the new data will automatically be transferred across all lookup databases in order to retain links to the original related data. In other words, you will never need to click an Update (U) Name button again. In fact, this latter automatic name updating feature will now only work for FileMaker Pro 10 or higher. All other usual updates should work under FileMaker Pro 9 (should the databases be run under this application).
  • Fewer buttons because of the new Update script has resulted in a simplification of the interface design in a number of layouts.
  • Further simplification has occurred in the layout header design for a more Mac-like look and blend better with new toolbar design from FileMaker. Navigation buttons remain large and readbable and ready for new laptops with touch screens (in contrast to FileMaker's tiny navigation buttons in the Toolbar).
  • Added graphs where appropriate. For example, you can now see Total Sales (tax also included) graphs by Company, Individual, Date, Month, Year and Product (more can be added easily if you wish). Data for these graphs can be user selected. In other words, you can choose to focus on the top 5, 10, 20 or more individuals and/or companies earning you the highest sales and keep track of the results in real time (as the orders come in and get paid). The same with dates, month, year and products. Graphs are fully expandable with window size and page setup. Simple graph designs for business use.   • Some minor changes to the Help section.

  • Optimisation of Contacts database and selected lookup databases has led to a number of interesting and useful improvements: apart from reducing the number of fields and making scripts compact, we have noticed a new method for creating self-testing fields. Now all individual and company names are automatically cleaned up of carriage returns and extra spaces, and first letter capitalised. All other relevant fields get the same treatment. Original testing scripts made redundant and removed, leaving behind just the email address auto enter option (using your preferred email address structure). We have also created a new sort records script considered the most compact, flexible and is completely autonomous. It means any field can be added, modified, removed or made into repeating fields and the sort function will work everytime. As a consequence, a new categories system has now been developed using the repeating field concept. And it will allow the developer to add unlimited categories with ease on request by users. Other refinements to the fields are likely to take place in the future because of this new sort system.
  • Added tooltip to help explain meaning of Do Not Call and Email Opt Out checkboxes when an X appears.

  • Grouped personal and financial layouts and given them their own menu commands under SUNRISE Contacts 2008. As a result, the Address Book layouts have been simplified. Keyboard commands also make navigation to these layouts quicker and easier.
  • Added a Sales Performance layout to the Finance section.
  • Added currency symbol to finance section of contacts.fp9. Added additional fields to help provide stage 1 of analytics and reporting for managers wanting to analyse sales, performance of salespeople, sales by region, sales by individuals and company names etc. Stage 2 of analytics will be to send reporting data of choice to a separate table and export this table data to Microsoft Excel where graphs can be incorporated.
  • Discussions with a design consultant (who has earned himself a free copy of this database) has confirmed that the database designs are good with only a few exceptions (see below).
  • The picture on the left behind categories is considered too arty-farty (difficult to see what it is) and hard to see the categories (too much distraction). We have decided on a simpler design for the picture and provided the option in the Preferences section for users to choose their own picture.
  • A shade lighter in yellow for all relevant field backgrounds in contacts.fp9 (no other databases require this change). It could go more lighter. But make the yellow too light and it loses the two-colour design integrity. We will work on this aspect further in upcoming release versions.
  • One point higher on the font size for categories. Makes for easier reading.
  • Capitalised black header title on all databases to minimise interference of the black text with the white text below it (eg. the "p" in Lookup). Also provides a contrasting design between the black and white text adding to their visual appeal and relevance.
  • Redesigned Preferences section using tabs, since the options have become too numerous and difficult to find.
  • There is the possibility for the layout navigation buttons to be made larger or choose another method, and to combine more information into one or two layouts in the Address book and/or use tabs. These are basically a matter of personal taste. We will work on a solution to these design issues in a future release.
  • It seems any other design issues comes down to personal taste, and sometimes the methods employed by other CRM competitors to slow down or stop the competition. Until FileMaker Pro decides to come up with powerful 3D designing tools for creating and easily modifying buttons and special effects to text and whole areas to help lift the database out of the screen and bring it on par with OSX and Windows Vista interface designs, simplicity will remain paramount in this database design. Whether it meets Windows or OSX UI design principles really gives way to whether the software is easy to use and achieves the objectives of the user.

  • Due to a FileMaker interface design problem whereby headers and footers are not clickable if the active field runs underneath them causing problems for users to exit out of a field by clicking in the header or footer, we have introduced a Commit Request/Record command under the Records menu with its own associated Command Option C key combination. This will make it easier to exit out of an active field. A useful feature to have in the documents composer section of contacts.fp9 where the field has to be naturally large.
  • Unlimited email filtering (spam recording) in sendemail.fp9. Never read emails or download attachments from spammers ever again.
  • Updated send and receive email scripts to handle latest SMTPit Pro and POP3it Pro plug-ins. Re-tested all scripts including ability to download and upload attachments. Added more tabs in Email section of contacts.fp9 to help quickly view emails by Sent, Send, On Hold, Read and Unread. Also included a Delete tab to show email marked for deletion. Click the portal row and choose Delete Record to permanently remove the emails or go into the lookup database.

  • Added status message to Web Viewer.
  • Improved the scripts for Web Viewer's Home and Go buttons.
  • Reactivated Show All Records, Sort Records and Show Omitted Only under the Record menu to work with Web Viewer.
  • Added the ability to extract all URLs in contacts.fp9 to the Web Viewer.
  • New Message button intially clears the subject and message fields. Clicking again clears the header information. This makes it easier for users to retain email address(es) when creating a new message.
  • Added Subject to the Message tab of Email layout in contacts.fp9.
  • Two field name changes to tracker.fp9 for consistency with other third-party databases (and allows for greater compatibility and ease of importing and exporting of data).
  • Added a test at startup where a change in filename for contacts.fp9 may be attempted by users. Until FileMaker Inc. improves the flexibility of choosing filenames through a simple piece of text, this needs to be fixed to allow lookup databases to access contacts.fp9. The same has been done to all lookup databases.
