Movie Collector Changelog

What's new in Movie Collector 20.2.1

Dec 2, 2020
  • We had tested our software on Big Sur betas before the actual Big Sur release and did not find any problems. However, as soon as Big Sure went live, users started reporting crashes in various areas of the program, mainly when syncing and after adding or editing entries.
  • With the help of these users, and after trying several test builds with them, we have finally resolved all known crashes, which has resulted in today’s v20.2 Big Sur compatible release.
  • If you are using Big Sur, we strongly recommend updating to this v20.2 version.
  • Finally, if you still see problems on Big Sur with this new version, please us know, so that we can fix any remaining bugs.

New in Movie Collector 20.1 (Apr 17, 2020)

  • Faster CLZ Cloud syncing:
  • We have made several structural changes to the CLZ Cloud syncing, making it much much faster than before, especially when syncing large amounts of entries up to the CLZ Cloud or down from the CLZ Cloud.
  • To enjoy the faster syncing, you need to use the actual Sync with CLZ Cloud screen. (The Auto-Syncing in the background is also slightly faster now, but if you need to sync many entries up or down, please use the Sync with CLZ Cloud screen.)
  • Fixed:
  • Link to Core: changing the search criteria could crash the program
  • Add screen: changed the “already in collection” font color in dark skin to be more readable
  • Report missing movie to Core wasn’t working correctly
  • Main screen: The “Rating” column could not be moved to a different place
  • Improved cover scaling for syncing

New in Movie Collector 20.0.4 (Feb 4, 2020)

  • Now uses our brand-new CLZ Cloud Sync-server:
  • Previously one big server was handling the Connect website, the CLZ Cloud website AND the CLZ Cloud syncing from the desktop programs and the mobile apps. But this week we have set up a brand-new dedicated Sync-server to handle just the CLZ Cloud syncing.
  • In today’s update, Movie Collector has been updated to sync through this new server, which should result in faster syncing and a more stable syncing experience during high load times (weekends).
  • Fixed:
  • For some users, the database conversion of version 20.0.3 caused the loss of data in their User Defined Fields. This problem has been resolved now.
  • If you lost UDF data, please contact us so that we can help you get the data back.

New in Movie Collector 20.0.2 (Dec 18, 2019)

  • Dark Mode support:
  • Yes, your Movie Collector software now finally supports the macOS Light vs Dark mode setting (available in Mojave and Catalina). That is, if you have your macOS set to Dark mode, Movie Collector now nicely shows up with a dark background in all screens!
  • To change your macOS settings for light, dark or auto mode:
  • Click the Apple icon top left and select “System Preferences”.
  • Click “General”
  • For Appearance, select Light, Dark or Auto (auto changes from light to dark based on day/night).
  • Close the screen.
  • New HDR field:
  • We’ve added a new HDR field on your Edition Specs tab so you can set up what type of HDR is used for your 4K edition. Pick between HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision.
  • Many fields added to the sync:
  • We have recently updated our CLZ Cloud storage and the CLZ Movies mobile app to support many more fields. In today’s v20 release, Movie Collector for macOS becomes fully compatible with the new sync system and mobile app.
  • These are all ‘edition-specific” fields, that is, information specific to the DVD, Blu-ray or 4K edition that you own. The following extra fields now sync with the CLZ Cloud / Movie Connect / CLZ Movies:
  • Subtitles
  • Audiotracks
  • Screen ratios
  • Layers
  • HDR (HDR10 / HDR10+ / Dolby Vision)
  • Color / Black and White / Both
  • Edition Release Date
  • Extras
  • Back Cover
  • IMPORTANT: after the update MANY movies will need to Sync to CLZ Cloud:
  • Please note that after updating your software to version 20, Movie Collector needs to upload any movie entry that contains information in any of the above fields. For some users this could mean almost your entire collection needs to be synced to the CLZ Cloud again. This is necessary to upload your data for the above new cloud sync fields.
  • We are aware this can take a long time, especially for large collections, but there really is no way around this, sorry.
  • Back Covers:
  • With this big update for Movie Collector we’re adding custom back covers to the sync!
  • We introduced a new checkbox “Custom Image” in the Edit screen for back covers of movie entries. This checkbox will be automatically checked when you replace the Core image, e.g. by using Find Cover Online, by dragging and dropping or by using the Browse button to add a local image.
  • Once this Custom Image box is checked, that cover will automatically sync to and from the CLZ Cloud.
  • Same as with custom front covers, you can automatically check your database for custom images by clicking menu Tools / Maintenance / Auto Mark Custom Images. You only have to do this once!
  • Also, they will always stay marked as custom, so that even if you clear your cloud and sync everything again, they will re-upload automatically.
  • Modifications to the edit screen:
  • The Location field has been moved to the bottom of the Edit Screen
  • Collection Status field is now a dropdown menu
  • Added a “Both” option to the Color / Black and White field
  • Edit screen is a bit less wide now

New in Movie Collector 19.2 (Apr 25, 2019)

  • Add Movies straight from IMDb, using the IMDb Number or URL
  • Now get “official” IMDb Cast and Crew lists for ALL movies in our Core
  • Also, new support for 12 digital movie formats, complete with icons and logos

New in Movie Collector 19.1.1 (Mar 21, 2019)

  • New: IMDb Votes field:
  • This new field indicates the number of votes on which the IMDb Rating is based. It is a good indication of 1. how popular the movie is and 2. how trustworthy the rating is.
  • The IMDb Votes field is automatically filled in when you Add a Movie from Core. (Note: similar to IMDb Ratings and Links, getting IMDb Votes from Core requires an active Service Plan)
  • It is also shown in the yellow IMDb box in your movie details panel, right below the logo and rating (for the Flex, QuickSilver and Carbon templates).
  • Tip: add the IMDb Votes as a column in your list, so that easily see for all your movies or even sort on it to order your list by the movie’s popularity.
  • New: Update your IMDb Ratings and Votes in one go:
  • The new IMDb content license gives us daily updates of the IMDb Ratings and Votes, so let’s make use of that daily fresh data now!
  • Select some (or all) movies in your list, then right click and choose Update IMDb Ratings / Votes from the menu.
  • This will connect to our Core and retrieve fresh IMDb Ratings and Votes for all selected movies.
  • Don’t worry, this won’t take long. We have implemented a super efficient system that can update ratings/votes in chunks of 100 movies in one go.
  • When done, it will report the number of movies it has updated the Ratings and Votes for.
  • Note: using the “Update IMDb Ratings/Votes” feature requires an active Service Plan.
  • Other changes:
  • Renamed format “Blu-ray Disc” to “Blu-ray”
  • Renamed format “Ultra HD Blu-ray” to “4K UHD”
  • Updated the format icon for 4K UHD

  • A new super-adaptive “Flex” template for the Details Panel
  • IMDb features are back!

New in Movie Collector 18.3.7 (Dec 31, 2018)

  • Sometimes covers weren’t uploaded when they should have.
  • The error: “This database is different from the one in CLZ Cloud” would show up in rare cases when it shouldn’t.
  • Main Screen:
  • There were still some cases where “follow edited item” option was not working.
  • Folder grouping on a credit role would show folders for all credit roles instead of just the one selected.

New in Movie Collector 17.0.6 (Sep 22, 2017)

  • Fixed:
  • Quick Search suggestion box could crash the app.
  • Alphabet bar wasn’t working anymore.

New in Movie Collector 17.0.5 (Sep 22, 2017)

  • Next week, Apple will release the new macOS 10.13 “High Sierra”. If you are planning to update your Mac to this new OS, then we strongly recommend to update your Movie Collector software to today’s version 17.0.5!
  • Movie Collector problems on High Sierra: We have been testing our software on beta versions of High Sierra for quite a while, to make sure we were ready for it’s release. We found that most of the software seems to be working as normal.
  • Unfortunately, we found a big problem in the Preferences screen, it does not open at all anymore, making it impossible to make any changes to program settings.
  • Luckily, our Mac developer Ronald was able to fix the Preferences screen to make it work on the new macOS. A fix was released today, in version 17.0.5.
  • Fixed:
  • Preferences screen didn’t load properly on macOS 10.13 “High Sierra”.
  • Upload Cover to CLZ Core: Images were not always uploaded properly even if they were within the 500KB file size limit.
  • Main Screen: Quick Search: Occasional crashes in the quick search when using the “Search-as-you-type” suggestions.
  • Sync with CLZ Cloud: Sometimes crashed during the upload of covers.

New in Movie Collector 17.0.4 (May 23, 2017)

  • Fixed:
  • Add Movies Automatically: the cursor in the search title box would sometimes jump to the end while changing the search term.
  • Upload cover to CLZ Core: sometimes images were not uploaded properly because of the 500K size restriction although they were smaller in size.

New in Movie Collector 17.0.3 (Mar 22, 2017)

  • We’ve expanded the quick search box to now also allow “search-as-you-type” with suggestions for pick list fields.
  • How does it work:
  • In the quick search box top right of your screen you should see a “dropdown” button. Use this to select which field you wish to perform a search on. If “search-as-you-type” is available for that field, it will instantly work once you start typing in the box.
  • Example:
  • You can now select the field “Actor” in the quick search box, start typing an actor name, and instantly see suggestions (based on what you typed) of actors you have in your database. Click on an actor to see all his/her movies!
  • Box set images:
  • Box set images didn’t display correctly in the image strip popup. This has now been fixed, click a box set image and it should show correctly in the image strip popup now.

New in Movie Collector 17.0.2 (Mar 8, 2017)

  • Fixed:
  • Program would crash at startup on macOS 10.9 or older
  • Search-As-You-Type tweaked to search first letters of each word only, making the results more precise
  • Add Movies Automatically : image popup for cover was showing the images of the selected item in main screen

New in Movie Collector 17.0.1 (Mar 8, 2017)

  • Quick Search: Search-As-You-Type suggestions:
  • Instantly find and select a particular movie in your local database:
  • In the Quick Search box, just start typing the first few letters of the title you are looking for.
  • While typing, a drop-down list will appear, showing the first five matching movies. (for most movies, it only takes 2 or 3 letters before it shows up.)
  • Once you see the one you were looking for, use the up/down keys to select it, then hit Enter.
  • The movie will now be selected in your list, with the details showing in the Details Panel.
  • NOTE: this Search-As-You-Type feature replaces the old “filter-as-you-type” behaviour of the Quick Search box. If you want to go back to the old behaviour, you can do so in the Preferences screen, on the Behaviour page using the setting called “When typing in Quick Search box”.
  • Quick Search: Search Field selector:
  • Narrow down your searches to a particular field, e.g. search in Title only, or Plot only:
  • Click the new arrow button to the left of the Quick Search box. A list of search fields will appear.
  • Now pick the field you want to search in.
  • Use the Quick Search box as you normally would to search in this field only.
  • New Multi-Image-Viewer pop-up:
  • Easily browse all images attached to a movie:
  • In the movie details panel, click an image to open it in the new Multi-Image-Viewer popup.
  • Click the thumbnails on the left (or just use up/down keys) to browse through all images attached to the movie: front cover, back cover, movie poster, backdrop and all other image files.
  • No more need to close the popup and click to re-open for the next image.

New in Movie Collector 16.2.1 (Dec 22, 2016)

  • Easily add movies that come up as "Unrecognized Barcode"
  • In Add Movies Automatically, when a barcode is not recognized, a new "Unrecognized Barcode" screen will appear.
  • In this screen:
  • Just find your movie by title (Search-As-You-Type is also active here!)
  • Select the format (DVD, Blu-Ray, etc..)
  • Use the integrated Find Cover tool to select the cover image.
  • Then click Add Movie.
  • This will:
  • Instantly add the barcode to OUR Core online movie database, connected to the movie you selected.
  • Add the movie to YOUR database with full movie details, your barcode, format and image AND linked to the new Core entry.
  • In other words, this new screen not only helps you in adding unrecognized movies,
  • but it also helps your fellow Movie Collector users by adding the missing barcode to the CLZ Core.
  • ( BTW: this screen replaces the "Report Missing Barcode to Core" web-form. Of course, you can still provide more info for the added barcode using the Submit to Core button in the Edit Movie screen. )
  • Fixed:
  • Main Screen: after resizing the first column too much, the text was no longer readable

New in Movie Collector 16.1.3.2935 (Oct 19, 2016)

New in Movie Collector 16.1.1.2911 (Aug 29, 2016)

  • NEW: "SEARCH-AS-YOU-TYPE" SUGGESTIONS WHEN ADDING MOVIES BY TITLE:
  • If you are adding most of your movies "By Title", then this will be a huge time-saver.
  • Here's how the new "Search-As-You-Type" feature works:
  • In the Add Movies Automatically screen, just start typing the first letters of the title you want to add.
  • While typing, a drop-down list will appear, showing the five most popular titles that match,
  • including the release year and a small thumbnail image.
  • For recent / popular movies, it usually takes only 2 or 3 letter before it shows up.
  • For older or less popular movies, type a few more letters.
  • Once you see your movie appear, use the arrow keys to select it, then hit Enter.
  • Then under Search Results, that exact movie will be listed, automatically Previewed on the right.
  • Click the Add Selected button to add it to your database.
  • Important: this is an *extra* tool, that makes it easier and faster to add recent and/or popular movies (although you should be able to find any older or less popular movie by typing more letters). It is not a replacement of the normal title search, which still works like it always did.
  • Some background: This new tool is doing an online search request to our server with every letter you type in the Search box, the results instantly updating the drop-down list with the 5 most popular matches.
  • To make these instant "suggestions" possible, our webdev guys have developed a completely new movie suggestions search engine. This new "Search-As-You-Type" engine is now running on its' own separate web-server in our server farm.

  • If you spot a data error while adding a movie in the Add Auto screen, choose Report Error to Core, and you'll be take to a form on the website where you can make the correction yourself (CLZ Account required).
  • Submitting movie data to Core:
  • An easier way to report errors or to submit extra data to us, is the Submit to Core feature (available from the Main and Edit screens). Submit to Core lets your upload your local data for a movie to the "Report to Core" form on the website and use that to fix or enhance our central Core data.
  • Core for Movies: Report Missing Movie now allows ANY website URL:
  • The Reporting Missing Movie feature lets you report movies that are missing from our Core for Movies online movie database.
  • Where previously an IMDB ID or IMDb URL was required, you can now also point us to any other website (e.g. an online shop) that shows the DVD or Blu-ray you're missing.
  • However: when your missing movie is actually listed on IMDb, please keep submitting an IMDb ID or IMDb URL.

  • NEW CLZ CLOUD SYNCING V2.0:
  • We have completely rewritten the CLZ Cloud syncing mechanism, to make it easier to use, faster, more reliable and capable of syncing very large databases:
  • Easier: One "Synchronize" button that syncs up and/or down as needed. No more need to choose the sync direction (Up or Down). Just click the single Synchronize button and the system will automatically upload your local changes and download your cloud-side changes.
  • Faster: Sync your additions, changes and removals within a few seconds. The software now keeps track of your adds, edits and removes, so when synchronizing with the CLZ Cloud, it already knows which items need to be up- or downloaded, making the actual sync very fast. ( the initial full sync may be slightly slower though, but you only need to do that once )
  • More scalable: Transfer very large databases without problems. The syncing process is now a series of tiny data uploads and downloads, as opposed to a single huge upload/download. This ensures that databases of any size can be synced.
  • More reliable: Solves many problems of the old syncing system. No more "invalid XML" when uploading large collections, no more changes that keep recurring every sync. No more starting from scratch in case of connection problems, just continue where you left off.
