New in Mailings 2.0.09 (Apr 23, 2012)

  • A blacklist may contain "regular expressions," as well as simple email address strings. In this way, when sending mail, you can filter out email addresses that have common patterns, such as the same domain name. (The blacklist is entered in Preferences.) Ex. The regular expression ".*limit-point\.com$" will match any string that ends with "limit-point.com"

New in Mailings 2.0.08 (Mar 5, 2012)

  • Bug fix: Fixed a a newly discovered bug that could cause the app to crash if it's location pathname is too long.

New in Mailings 2.0.07 (Aug 29, 2011)

  • Message Monitor update: Fixed an issue with external IP address loading that could cause the Message Monitor to report the external address incorrectly as "0.0.0.0." (Read more about the Message Monitor in the Mailings Help menu.)

New in Mailings 2.0.06 (Jun 3, 2011)

  • Browser support update: The app requires the ability to obtain the current web browser's front window's URL and title, so it can be imported automatically into Mailings.
  • See the "Load From > Current Web Page" popup menu item in a Mailer window, for example.
  • Recent changes to Chrome broke the ability to do that for Chrome, and it is now fixed. The method of obtaining the URL for Opera has also been updated.

New in Mailings 2.0 Beta 12 (Dec 9, 2010)

  • Loading Mail accounts settings: To aid in setting up your mail servers, the Server Settings window (accessible by clicking the "Server Settings" button in any Mailer window) has a new button labelled "Import Mail Settings." This imports the mail server address and account username of each SMTP account in Mail. These accounts then appear in the "Select Server" popup menu.
  • Automatic Authentication Detection: To aid in setting up your mail servers, the Server Settings window authentication popup menu has a new item labelled "Automatic" (replacing the previous item "None.") When this item is selected the authentication type that matches one of the authentication methods advertised by the mail server is used. This option is selected by default.
  • These previous two features, combined with the previous new features for selecting common ports, testing ports and selecting pre-configured servers form a menu, greatly eases the task of setting up mail servers properly in version 2.0.
  • HTML with Embedded Images: These are HTML messages whose images are included (embedded) in the message itself, rather than stored on a web server, making the message self contained, and requiring no internet access to view. This update greatly improves the ease of creating such messages by automatically modifying the HTML to support embedded image attachments (i.e. inserting "cid" or content id labels in the HTML image, "img", references) and automatically loading the referenced images into the attachments drawer. So, all you need to do is add the HTML file path to the "Web Page or File" text field, select "Embed" as the attachments type, and you're done! (The reference images are required to be in the same folder as the HTML file.) Tips: These automatic operations are performed when you create raw source, a preview email or sending out a mailing. Using the "Save Raw Source" feature of Mailings is a good way of testing your HTML with embedded images.
  • Activating automatic image embedding: The previous feature can be turned ON and OFF using a new checkbox in the "Message" pane of the Preferences window. It is labelled "When the "embed" attachments option is selected, insert content ID labels ("cid") in the HTML, and add the image attachments for me" This option is ON by default.
  • Removing attachments: A "Clear" button has been added to the attachments drawer for removing all attachments at once with a click of a button.
  • Various status messages and alerts have been created or modified for notification and clarity.

New in Mailings 2.0 Beta 11 (Dec 6, 2010)

  • The server settings window has a new popup menu for which you can pick a common SMTP port: 25, 587 and 465. (But you can also still enter a custom port of your choice.)
  • The server settings window has a new button "Text Port" which you can use to verify if the chosen port is valid. A side effect of this is that the result, if successful, can tell you if the mail server supports SSL and what authentication methods it is advertising (such as PLAIN, LOGIN, CRAM-MD5, etc.) This information can help you select other server settings.
  • A help button has been added to the Server Settings window to help you setup your mail server, and the help files have been updated for server setup.
  • The generation of Message ID was broken when changes were made to support "reply to" addresses changed. The ID was not being appended by a string of the form "@"
  • When the alert for an empty subject is displayed the default button has been set to "Cancel" and not "OK" as an answer to "do you want to continue?"
  • A new "help" menu item has been added: "Network Diagnostics..." that you can use to help you re-establish a connection to the internet. This feature is the same as Safari. When there is no internet connection an alert now advises: "Run Network Diagnostics from the Help menu for help."

New in Mailings 2.0 Beta 10 (Dec 3, 2010)

  • Error handling for the secure messenger has been improved; a couple of error types were not being acknowledged and no error message was displayed. This included "timeout" and "connection terminated".
  • Like the rest of the program, the secure (SSL) messenger now reports messages to the Mailings console log. The console log can be accessed easily from the Mailings File menu.
  • Help files have been expanded to cover more topics, and help buttons link to the new location on the web, on the new domain "MailingsPro.com" (the main website is not complete, but the help files are there.)
  • The secure messenger timeout for connections has been set to the value specifed in the "Special" pane of the Preference window.

New in Mailings 2.0 Beta 9 (Dec 1, 2010)

  • Fixed a bug in the processing of eml (raw source) messages which under certain circumstances caused the message body to be offset by possibly one character leading to malformed HTML.

New in Mailings 2.0 Beta 8 (Dec 1, 2010)

  • Fixed a bug in the Message Monitor that could cause the program to quit due to memory corruption. Mailings was writing data to a buffer that was not large enough for the data.
  • Installed the new program icon for version 2.
  • Ran the program through extensive testing to check stability in light of all the changes for version 2.0. (Please report any problems you find!)
  • Updated the help files, which now reside on the Internet, rather than inside the program. This enables updates without needing to update the application.

New in Mailings 2.0 Beta 7 (Dec 1, 2010)

  • Network reachability is checked before beginning a mailing to make sure the machine is connected to the internet.
  • The Message Monitor link was not always properly inserted into some HTML because string processing was previously case sensitive.
  • The Server Settings window now has a convenience button that you can use to access the Throttle pane of Preferences for controlling the rate mail is sent.
  • The Progress window and the Report logs now have header fields for displaying the status of Message Monitor as ON or OFF.
  • The default throttle type is now "Period Delay" as opposed to "Batch" to avoid any initial problem with the mail server due to overloading it with mail requests in batch mode.

New in Mailings 2.0 Beta 6 (Nov 24, 2010)

  • Fixed a problem with Message Monitor window updates that could cause a crash because the update was occurring from within the handling of the email client connection.
  • Fixed a possible cause for trouble in the management of multiple connected clients at once in the Message Monitor.
  • Added a new menu item named "Roll Message Monitor Log." When a log is rolled it is closed and renamed. Then a new, empty log is opened. This enables you to create new logs, while saving the previous log.
  • Added a new menu item named "Open Message Monitor Log." This enables you to switch between log files by opening a previous log file. Opening another log file will close the current log file.
  • Help system has been enhanced and moved to the internet for better control over it.

New in Mailings 2.0 Beta (Oct 31, 2010)

  • 3 new features:
  • Using SSL for use with accounts like Gmail
  • Using Apple Mail stationary (or any "elm" file) as your mail message
  • Using the Message Monitor for keeping track of recipients who opened your mail message

New in Mailings 1.9.84 (Oct 11, 2010)

  • Report Logs: When the option to automatically save a report log at the end of a mailing is selected in the "Logs" pane of the Preferences window, a copy of the last email message raw source is also saved. The raw source file is saved in the same location as the report log, and has the same name with an extension of "eml." These files can be opened/viewed by Apple Mail 3.
  • Batch using "Copy by Cc": When sending using "Copy by Cc" for the batch mode of Throttle, each copied recipient is listed within square brackets in the "address" section of the progress and report logs for the leading recipient of each batch. (Select this batch mode of throttle in the "Throttle" pane of the Preferences window; accessed using "Preferences…" from the application menu.)

New in Mailings 1.9.83 (Sep 19, 2010)

  • Unflagging recipients using Report Logs: In the "Select Recipients" window you have the option of using the "Send?" column for specifying if a particular recipient should be included in the current mailing by "flagging" them with a checkmark.
  • This is often useful if you need to resend a mailing which has been aborted because of network or mail server issues, but you do not want to resend the whole mailing because of duplicates.
  • Now, in addition to using the "Autosave" feature available in Preferences, you can now also specify if a recipient is flagged using a report log.
  • Use the new "Unflag from Report Log..." menu item in the "Task" menu at the bottom of the Select Recipients window to open a dialog box to select the report you want to use. All email addresses that had no error in the report log will be unflagged in the recipients list, if a matching email address is found in the Select Recipients list.

New in Mailings 1.9.82 (Sep 15, 2010)

  • Batch using "Copy by Bcc": When sending using "Copy by Bcc" for the batch mode of Throttle, each copied recipient is listed in the "address" section of the progress and report logs for the leading recipient of each batch. Select this batch mode of throttle in the "Throttle" pane of the Preferences window (accessed using "Preferences…" from the application menu.)

New in Mailings 1.9.81 (Aug 15, 2010)

  • Server Settings: The server settings panel now has a popup menu for saving and selecting common mail server settings. This is very useful for frequently saving and restoring mail server settings. Menu items will display the server address. Add and remove items using the adjacent + and - buttons. As always, passwords are saved in your keychain, so you may be prompted from time to time to allow for keychain access.

New in Mailings 1.9.80 (Aug 11, 2010)

  • Added a new type of Throttle, as a sub-type of batch mode. This new mode sends messages in batch by either carbon copying (Cc) or blind carbon copying (Bcc) messages. This is achieved by splitting the whole recipients list into batches of selected batch size. One message is sent to each batch, addressed to the first member of the batch, and carbon copied to every other recipient in the batch.
  • Although this feature can significantly reduce the amount of time sending messages, personalization of each message is no longer possible. For example, if you use a template tag, such as for the recipients first name, in a salutation, then every copied recipient will receive a message greeting them with, most likely, the wrong name, because everyone gets the same copy of the message in each batch.
  • The Throttle pane of the Preferences window has been modified to accommodate this new preference. If you select the "Batch" mode of Throttle, then a new popup menu named "Batch type" is available, with options: "No copying." "Copy by Cc" and "Copy by Bcc"
  • Throttle display in the progress window reflects these changes to display the currently selected throttle type and batch subtype. (Note that the progress window will not list each copied recipient, only the recipient the message is actually addressed to in the mail message sent to the mail server.)

New in Mailings 1.9.79 (Aug 7, 2010)

  • The program now facilitates the easy addition of attachments in various text formats for "inline" viewing by automatically converting them to PDF files. This includes files of type rich text whose extensions are RTF or RTFD. Generally, any text format that can be opened and saved as a PDF from TextEdit is supported by this feature. Additionally, you can combine this feature with the "Split PDF" feature, previously added in version 1.9.76, to add the resulting PDF as multiple files, one for each page of the resulting PDF, so that they are viewable "inline" in mail clients, such as Apple Mail. Select these options in the "Behavior" pane of Preferences; they are both OFF by default.

New in Mailings 1.9.78 (Aug 2, 2010)

  • A new button on the Mailer window named "Progress" enables you to preview the settings on the progress window, or re-open the progress window when a mail batch has completed or been aborted.
  • When the option "Restore flagged recipients if no errors" is selected, recipients will not be reset if the mailing was aborted - this lets you pick up where you leave off if you abort the mailing from the progress window. So, this option will cause the "flagged" recipients to be reset to their flagged state when the mailing completes if there were no errors or not aborted.
  • The "Restore flagged recipients if no errors" checkbox has been moved from the "Logs" pane of Preferences to the "Behavior" pane.
  • (Note: Flagged recipients are those recipients you choose to send mail to in "Select Recipients" using the "Send?" checkbox column. Not resetting the recipients flagged state enables you to resume a mailing that may have been aborted due to errors, such as a poor internet connection or the mail server bandwidth being exceeded.)

New in Mailings 1.9.77 (Jul 22, 2010)

  • Improved Other Options panel: "people picker" and "address type" popup buttons have been added so that you can set the CC, BCC, Reply-To and Return Address fields from Address Book cards. Click the people picker button. Drag cards out of the people picker into the edit field you want to set. The email address chosen from the card is based on the value of the address type chosen (work, home, primary or other.)
  • Improved Add Recipient panel: an "address type" popup button has been placed inside the window adjacent to the people picker button. This button will determine what address type - work, home, primary or other - will be used when a recipient is dragged into one of the text fields : first name, last name or email address.
  • Fixed: a recent update inadvertently caused the message ID to lose its closing "greater than" (>) bracket.
  • Improved: the "Simulate to Self" feature was using the "Reply To" value of "Other Options", which means it didn't work if that entry was empty. Now it simulates to the person sending the mailing, namely the "From" setting of the Mailer window, which is addressed using the Address Book "Me" card or entered on the "Manual" tab. (This feature is useful for previewing a subset of the mailing - use the "Select Recipients" button to set the "Send?" flags for testing on just those recipients. Mail is not sent to them in the mailing, but to you, if you are who the mail is from. All template tags will be evaluated using the true recipient however, so you get a true preview of the mail.)

New in Mailings 1.9.76 (Jul 16, 2010)

  • Feature fix: HTML web page imaging (to JPEG or TIFF image files) was inadvertently broken as a result of the added support in a recent update for including template tags in attachment pathnames and filenames (useful for creating "personalized" attachments per recipient.)
  • HTML web page imaging has been extended to include the PDF format, as well as JPEG and LZW TIFF from previous versions. This format is useful because it makes a self contained email message, composed of a PDF file, with images and preserving links. It is best if the recipients are using email clients that can display inline PDF documents so they don't have to download them to their computer to open them in another program. (File formats for HTML web page imaging is specified in Preferences on the "Message" pane.)
  • Added a new option to the "Behavior" pane of program preferences named "Split PDFs" for PDF attachments (adjacent to the "Zip Folders" option.) When a PDF file is added, either using the "Add" button or dragging a PDF into the attachments list, the PDF is split into multiple PDF files, one for each page. Then each single page PDF file is added to the attachments list (in the proper order.) The single page PDF's are stored in a "temporary" folder in the cache folder of your computer. This feature is useful for clients who have email readers, like Mail, that can display single page PDF's inline, or allowing recipients to only load pages they are interested in, rather than the whole PDF file.

New in Mailings 1.9.75 (Jun 21, 2010)

  • The raw source of a preview of the mailing can be saved to disk for archiving or previewing purposes.
  • The type of the file is determined by the extension "eml" (the same used by Apple Mail) and it can be opened for viewing in Apple Mail.
  • Generate the raw source file with the new "Raw Source" button in every Mailer window. When this button is clicked a preview is generated and then you are prompted for a location to save its raw source.

New in Mailings 1.9.74 (Jun 19, 2010)

  • Fixed a memory leak.

New in Mailings 1.9.73 (Jun 16, 2010)

  • The "Web Page or File" text field now accepts dropped folders. The folder will either be attached as a zip archive or its contents will be attached depending on the selected option in the "Behavior" pane of the Preferences window. (This option to zip folders is off by default.)

New in Mailings 1.9.72 (Jun 8, 2010)

  • Imaging URLs for message content: Fixed a problem that occurred with some websites in which the image would contain scroll bars due to an inadequate image size. (This option to image URLs as JPEG or LZW TIFF images for body content is selected using the "Image" checkbox located adjacent to the "Web Page or File" text field at the top of every Mailer window.)

New in Mailings 1.9.71 (Jun 5, 2010)

  • Added support for specifying a "reply to" address. Use the "Other Options" button in any Mailer window to enter an email address for the reply. (You can also enter CC, BCC and return path email addresses.) If you want to include a name with the email address, then the form of the address must take the form "name " as in "Pat Conroy "

  • Demos are now re-activated when a demo of a previous version expires, this enables you to try new features added since your previous demo.

New in Mailings 1.9.67 (May 10, 2010)

  • When support for template tags in attachment names was added in version 1.9.62 mail previewed with attachments did not contain the attachments. This version fixes that: you can now preview mail with the attachments attached.

New in Mailings 1.9.62 (Apr 19, 2010)

  • The attachments list can now include templates, as in the attachments pathname text field (i.e. the text field above the list.) This enables you to send different attachments based on the name or email address of the recipients, i.e. personalize them. This is done simlpy by including template tags in the file and/or directory names that locate the various attachments. See the file "Adding Attachments" in the software distribution for a quick example of this process.
  • Bug fix: When using Address Book (Mac OS 10.5+) for addressing recipients, the order of records received is not consistent across sessions. This caused problems when restoring "unsent" recipients because the indices of those recipients did not match the previous session. This has been fixed by always ordering the records by their "unique id" returned by Address Book.
  • Bug fix: The display of recipients in the progress sheet would sometimes show repetitions of the same recipient, this has been fixed by refreshing the whole progress list displayed rather than just the last record processed.

New in Mailings 1.9.61 (Apr 14, 2010)

  • The report log now shows the email address of the "sender" in the header.

  • When setting the body of the message to a web page, i.e. URL, Mailings will try to get the title from the HTMl source if it can not query the title from the front running browser.

New in Mailings 1.9.58 (Mar 27, 2010)

  • The Blacklist can now be exported from the Preferences window.
  • You are alerted prior to clearing the Blacklist.

The blacklist is no longer automatically applied to each mailing, You apply the blacklist (which is loaded from the "Blacklist" pane of the preferences window) from the Select Recipients window. Choose "Unflag Blacklisted" to remove the "Send?" flag from each recipient who is blacklisted. You can do this for imports or Address Book groups. (Only flagged recipients receive messages for the current mailing.)

  • When you click the button an Address Book people chooser will display.
  • Drag a person from this window into one of the text fields (first name, last name or email address) to automatically populate all the fields with the name and email address of that person.

New in Mailings 1.9.51 (Feb 15, 2009)

New in Mailings 1.9.33 (Mar 13, 2008)

  • The encoding of the plain text alternative (preamble, epilogue) is derived from the selection in the character set menu when it is the message (i.e. when there is no web page or file specified.)
  • The encoding of the contents of the preamble or epilogue is now determined from the selected character set to avoid problems with character display when merging into an HTML file which is not utf-8. The encoding was previously always assumed to be utf-8.
  • Fixed a bug in which the character set of the HTML file was not always extracted because of variations in how the "meta http-equiv=content-type" may be specified, namely with or without quotes around "context-type"
